The southeastern region of Lam Dong Province is not only known for its beautiful beaches and historical heritage, but also for its bustling traditional markets. Among them, Phan Thiet Market stands out as one of the most vibrant, helping preserve the cultural identity of coastal communities.

A bustling market with over 300 years of history

According to Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi, Phan Thiet was established in 1697 as one of four administrative units of Binh Thuan Prefecture. With strong maritime economic potential, the area gradually attracted settlers. By the 19th century, it had become a thriving urban center, with crowded streets above and busy fishing and trading boats below.

Located along the poetic Ca Ty River, Phan Thiet Market, locally known as Cho Lon, reflects the economic development of the southeastern coastal region. Every day, thousands of people pass through its entrances, creating a vivid picture of a traditional market that has existed for more than three centuries while blending into modern life.

The market features a harmonious mix of traditional and modern architecture. With a large scale, it is organized into rows of interconnected buildings, forming a diverse network of stalls. Sections are arranged systematically, from fresh food to dried goods and local specialties, making shopping convenient for both residents and visitors.

The culture of a coastal land

From early morning, the busiest area is the seafood section. Here, baskets of fish and shrimp freshly caught from overnight fishing trips are still glistening. Mackerel, ponyfish, squid, and other seafood are neatly displayed at reasonable prices.

Not only locals but also tourists come here to buy fresh seafood as gifts. Vendors are willing to clean, process, and pack the products to ensure freshness and quality.

No visit to this traditional coastal market is complete without exploring its food section. Familiar dishes such as banh canh cha ca, banh hoi, mi Quang and banh quai vac are simple yet rich in local flavor. Meanwhile, desserts like pancakes, sweet soups, and flan offer a light sweetness with the aroma of coconut milk and eggs.

Amid rapid urbanization and the rise of supermarkets and convenience stores, Phan Thiet Market has gradually adapted.

According to market management, more than 500 households are registered to operate businesses at the site. Traders are improving service quality, maintaining transparent pricing, ensuring food safety and reorganizing stalls for better presentation.

Many vendors have also begun promoting their products through social media, reflecting a shift from a traditional closed marketplace to a more open and connected commercial space.

“When I visit Phan Thiet, I always stop by Cho Lon because the products are fresh and diverse. I also get to experience and better understand the daily life of local people,” said Tran Thi Thuong, a visitor from Ho Chi Minh City.

Visitors say the market offers more than just shopping.
