A Young Widow and Her Two Sons in Need of Community Support
The sudden loss of a family’s breadwinner can shatter any sense of stability—especially when young children are left behind. This is the painful reality facing Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hieu and her two sons in Phu Thuy Ward, Lam Dong Province, following the passing of her husband in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mrs. Hieu currently lives with her two children and their 78-year-old grandmother, Nguyen Thi Luu, in a modest home in Phu Thuy Ward. For many years, Mrs. Luu sustained the family through her traditional fish sauce craft, relying on a dozen ceramic jars as her primary source of income. However, for the past two years, these jars have remained empty, as the family can no longer afford the raw materials needed for production.
At present, the household’s only income comes from Mrs. Hieu’s labor-intensive work, as she spends long days cleaning and washing dishes at a small local eatery. The earnings are barely enough to cover basic daily necessities.
Recalling the darkest period following her husband’s death, Mrs. Hieu shared that her elder son was just four years old, while the younger had only turned two. With no savings and children too young to be left alone, she struggled to find stable employment. Yet, amid such overwhelming hardship, she made a firm decision: her children must continue their education, believing it to be their only path toward a better future.
Her eldest son, Nguyen Tan Tai, is currently a Grade 4 student, while the younger, Nguyen Tan Duy, is in Grade 2 at Thanh Hai Primary School. Despite having fragile health, Duy stands out as an excellent student, known for his intelligence, discipline, and strong determination to learn.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, Principal of Thanh Hai Primary School, Duy demonstrates remarkable academic potential and an extraordinary will to overcome adversity. The school continues to provide support and encouragement, hoping that improved living and health conditions will allow the young boy to fully develop his abilities in the years ahead.
The story of this young widow and her two fatherless children has deeply moved the local community. In the face of poverty and loss, Mrs. Hieu refuses to surrender to despair, choosing instead to persevere every day—for her children’s education, dignity, and future. Her resilience stands as a quiet but powerful reminder of the importance of compassion, solidarity, and community support.
