Blooming Melaleuca by the Coast
Beyond its familiar sea breeze and sunshine, southeastern Lam Dong has a unique seasonal attraction: the bloom of melaleuca flowers. Each year in late December, the coastal road from Vo Nguyen Giap Street to Hoa Thang – Hoa Phu is lined with golden blossoms, presenting a fresh perspective on the region’s tranquil sandy landscapes.

From Phan Thiet ward, following Vo Nguyen Giap Street to Hoa Thang commune, there is a whole different world for visitors, where melaleuca forests stretch along both sides of the road. Unlike the showy flowers of more famous seasons, the golden hue of melaleuca blooms is gentle, flowing endlessly against the blue sky and vast dunes.
These melaleuca trees are drought-resistant, different from timber varieties. They are relatively short and not only add scenic beauty but also help stabilize the soil and protect against wind and sand. Each leaf axil bears a small flower, 4–7 cm long, resembling a squirrel’s tail. The thin, needle-like petals feel soft as velvet, with a powdery layer. Early blooms have a brownish-yellow shade, mingling with the bright yellow of newly opened flowers, creating a warm, elegant palette of gold.
Growing naturally without care or watering, these trees bloom for nearly a month every year in late December. The flowers’ charm lies in their simplicity rather than scent or showiness. Amid the harsh sunshine and wind of southeastern Lam Dong, the golden blooms soften the landscape’s dryness.
Thousands of golden flowers light up the road. A leisurely motorbike ride with stops in shaded spots offers visitors serene photo opportunities. For young couples, the season marks beautiful moments of youth and love. For seniors, the flowers evoke reflections on life and nature as spring approaches. Nature lovers will find every small scene a unique artistic composition.
Unlike crowded tourist spots, the Hoa Thang – Hoa Phu melaleuca forests remain pristine. There are no vendors, no loudspeakers, only the wind and faint floral fragrance. Ms. Nguyen Thi Dung, from Ho Chi Minh City exclaimed, “The scenery is stunning. Under the harsh sun, with the strong sea breeze, the golden flowers wave proudly. Being here brings peace to the soul, a full return to nature.”
While many spots are great for photographing the flowers, the densest stretches are along the Hoa Thang – Hoa Phu route. The best times for photography are between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m., when the sunlight is soft, and late afternoon from 3:30–5:00 p.m., when the golden glow of sunset enhances the scene.
The melaleuca forests bloom at the end of December and around New Year’s Day, making it an ideal check-in spot not to be missed on any trip to Lam Dong’s blue coast.
