Many residents in Lam Dong Province’s western border regions are welcoming this Lunar New Year with renewed optimism, thanks to robust and steady incomes from their key agricultural crops.

A Rewarding Coffee Season

For Nguyen Thi Thu Uyen’s family in Thuan Nam Hamlet, Thuan An Commune, the 2026 Lunar New Year arrives with joy after harvesting nearly two hectares of coffee. The beans have been carefully dried, bagged and stored, allowing the family to wait for the most favorable market conditions to sell.

Uyen said her family cultivates a local coffee variety that ripens later than common strains, with the harvest concluding only in early January 2026. Yields reached nearly five tons per hectare, and with current prices hovering around VND 100 million per ton, the family is looking forward to a substantial profit.

Beyond productivity, bean quality has improved thanks to proper harvesting, drying and storage techniques. Coffee is packed in double-layer white sacks, sealed tightly and stored on clean, well-ventilated racks, preserving the flavor of organically grown beans. This approach allows the family to avoid immediate post-harvest sales — a necessity in previous years when debts forced early selling.

According to the Thuan An Commune Farmers’ Association, the 2025–2026 coffee season has been largely successful, with stable prices averaging around VND 100 million per ton since late 2025. At this level, farmers can earn profits exceeding VND 50 million per ton, contributing to a more prosperous Tet season across the community.

Borderland Macadamia Nuts in High Demand

In nearby border commune Quang Truc, farmers are also enjoying solid incomes from coffee, pepper and particularly macadamia trees — a crop increasingly recognized for its suitability to the region’s soil and climate.

Quang Truc Commune has over 1,000 hectares of macadamia already in harvest.

As consumer demand shifts toward natural and sustainably farmed nuts, macadamia — often dubbed the “queen of nuts” — has become especially popular during Tet. This year, prices have climbed to over VND 200,000 per kilogram, boosting farmers’ confidence in continuing long-term cultivation.

Statistics show that Quang Truc Commune has more than 4,400 hectares of industrial crops, including over 1,000 hectares of macadamia already in harvest. Total agricultural, forestry and fisheries production value for the 2020–2025 period reached VND 1.63 trillion, exceeding targets. Furthermore, the commune has also developed five macadamia products recognized under the OCOP (One Commune One Product) program, linked to new rural development and poverty reduction initiatives, particularly for ethnic minority communities.

With domestic and export demand rising, especially during the holiday season, borderland farmers are entering the new year with confidence and anticipation for continued growth.
