Discovering Thuan An Volcano: A Unique Natural and Cultural Heritage
Thuan An Volcano, located within the Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark complex, stands out not only for its geological significance but also for its cultural ties to the M’nông community in Thuan An commune, Lam Dong province.

Unique geological heritage
According to scientists, this volcano last erupted between 781,000 and 126,000 years ago and remains remarkably well-preserved. With a diameter of about 300 meters and a height of approximately 80 meters, the volcano has a slope of about 20 degrees. Its oval shape features a steeper southwest flank, while the northeast side slopes gently. At the crater and slopes, researchers have only found ash and volcanic debris, indicating that it is a volcano that erupted explosively.
An additional testament to the volcano's relatively young age is the "cold forest" area, spanning approximately 10,000 hectares in Dak Song commune, located to the east of Thuan An Volcano. This area has temperatures 3-4 degrees Celsius lower than surrounding forests, with 4,000 hectares converted to coffee cultivation but still maintaining a cooler climate. Nearby, several mineral springs rich in CO2 are being exploited, suggesting that this region is still undergoing geological activity.
Tied to local legends
Not only is Thuan An Volcano a natural heritage site, but it also embodies numerous legends of the M’nông people. According to elder Y Kai from Jun Júh village, Đuc Lap commune, the mountain god Nâm Nung, with incredible strength, once ruled over a vast territory. During a journey, he saw the beautiful daughter of the mountain god Nâm Lê (Cambodia) and was determined to take her. Despite Nâm Lê's pleas for help from Nâm Gler (Thuan An Volcano) to negotiate for his daughter, the discussions were unsuccessful.
This failure angered Nâm Gler, leading to the collapse of the mountain, creating a caldera. To commemorate this story, locals refer to Thuan An Volcano as “Nâm Gler R’luh.”
Tourism potential and conservation
With its unique geological features and rich legends, Thuan An Volcano not only attracts visitors but also represents a valuable heritage that needs preservation. It is also a pride of Lam Dong people in promoting Dak Nong UNESCO Global Geopark. Exploring Thuan An Volcano offers tourists not only a chance to experience stunning nature but also an opportunity to learn about the culture and history of a land full of mysteries.
