Nestled along the banks of the Ca Ty River in Phan Thiet, Lam Dong Province, Duc Thanh School holds a revered place in Vietnamese history. From September 1910 to February 1911, young patriot Nguyen Tat Thanh — later known as President Ho Chi Minh—taught here before embarking on his historic journey to find a path to national salvation.

A School of Reform and Patriotism

Founded in 1907 by patriotic scholars inspired by the Duy Tan (Modernization) Movement led by Phan Chau Trinh, Tran Quy Cap, and Huynh Thuc Khang, Duc Thanh School was built on the ideals of “enlightening the people’s intellect, strengthening their will, and improving their livelihoods.” Beyond teaching classical Chinese and Quoc ngu (Vietnamese script), the school became a cradle of progressive ideas, instilling patriotism and a spirit of renewal in younger generations. Its very name, Duc Thanh—meaning “nurturing the youth”—reflected the mission of cultivating knowledge, character, and national pride.

Living Testimonies of History

More than a century later, Duc Thanh School still preserves many original structures: classrooms, living quarters, and the old well. Most cherished is the starfruit tree tended by teacher Nguyễn Tất Thành himself. Today, the tree continues to thrive, blossoming and bearing fruit year-round, affectionately known by locals as “Uncle Ho’s starfruit tree.” The moss-covered roofs, rustic wooden desks, and the quiet courtyard stand as silent witnesses to history, allowing visitors to feel the passage of time and imagine the modest yet meaningful days of Vietnam’s future leader.

A National Historical Site

Recognized as a national historical relic, Duc Thanh School has become a “red address” of patriotism, drawing students, citizens, and visitors from across the country. Since 1978, the provincial Party Committee and people of the former Binh Thuan province have restored the school. In 1983, a memorial complex was built nearby, including an exhibition house and a statue honoring President Ho Chi Minh, turning the site into a cultural and spiritual destination where visitors pay their respects.

Phan Hong Duong, a visitor from Ho Chi Minh City, shared his feelings after touring the site: “On this 80th National Day, walking through Duc Thanh School, I felt President Ho Chi Minh’s presence so vividly and sacredly. It was here that he sowed the first seeds of knowledge, revolutionary ideals, and patriotism before continuing his journey to Saigon and boarding the ship to find the path of national independence in 1911. Standing here, I feel I am witnessing the preparation for that great mission.”

A Sacred Reminder

Under the golden September sunlight, every step across the school’s tiled courtyard and every glance at the national flag fluttering in the wind becomes a sacred reminder. Duc Thanh School continues to inspire generations of Vietnamese to live, study, and dedicate themselves in a way worthy of the sacrifices of President Ho Chi Minh and those who came before.
