As Lam Dong builds its tourism brand, promoting a destination that is friendly, welcoming, and trustworthy has become central to its long-term strategy. Achieving the vision of every resident as a "tourism ambassador" requires these values to be embraced by everyone, from local communities to tourism service professionals.

From an Unfortunate Setback...

Lately, social media posts from visitors have highlighted instances of seafood fraud occurring at the Mui Ne Fishing Village. Although similar issues are not exclusive to the tourism sector, they are especially regrettable as Lam Dong aims to enhance its presence on the global tourism stage.

Recently, the community monitoring team along the seawall of Mui Ne fishing village discovered three suppliers dealing in low-quality lobsters. Investigations revealed that these inferior products had come from frozen seafood processing plants located outside the province.

Consequently, tourists who had spent high prices for what they thought were live lobsters later found out that they had in fact purchased frozen ones. While such actions may lead to quick profits for a few, they can significantly damage the reputation that the entire community has diligently worked to establish.

Nguyen Thi Huong, a seafood seller at Mui Ne Fishing Village, stated that trust from visitors is among the most valuable resources in the tourism sector. "The dishonest actions of even one or two vendors can not only harm the livelihoods of honest businesses but also tarnish the reputation of the entire destination. We offer fresh, high-quality seafood because we aim for visitors to come back and suggest Mui Ne to others," she remarked.

Negative experiences shared by visitors can quickly circulate on social media and travel forums, overshadowing the hard work of many individuals who have strived to present Lam Dong as a friendly destination. The takeaway extends beyond clear pricing; it touches on the principles of business ethics. Quick profits should never undermine the long-term reputation of a destination.

As Lam Dong works to develop its tourism identity, each local resident and tourism employee plays a vital role in enhancing the attractiveness and trustworthiness of the destination. Deceptive business practices, such as seafood substitution, not only infringe on visitors' rights but also conflict with the aspiration for every local resident to serve as a tourism ambassador.

In response to this challenge, the Mui Ne Ward People's Committee has set up a public hotline, created a community monitoring group, and increased inspections and enforcement along the seawall of the fishing village.

The Spirit of a Tourism Ambassador Must Be Embraced

The allure of Lam Dong goes well beyond its varied landscapes, which include highlands, forests, and coastlines. The province is home to 49 ethnic groups and features a rich cultural heritage, traditional craft villages, and unique agricultural products that contribute to a distinct identity for its tourism sector. Many travelers visit not just for the beautiful scenery, but also to immerse themselves in the local culture.

Harry Alision, a tourist from the United States, remarked: "When I hold a handcrafted Cham ceramic item, I can sense the traditions reflected in the artistry of the local craftsmen. What truly makes a journey significant is not the luxury of your accommodations, but the experiences and relationships you cultivate with the local community."

When local communities take pride in showcasing their heritage, they provide more than just products—they offer a glimpse into the essence of their homeland. This spirit is evident in traditional celebrations like the Kate Festival, the Central Highlands Gong Culture Festival, and the Long Tong Festival, where ethnic communities play a crucial role in preserving and upholding their cultural practices.

Tran Duc Dung, the head of the management board of the Po Sah Inu Cham Towers National Special Relic, mentioned that the Kate Festival has been celebrated annually since 2005 to fulfill the spiritual and cultural needs of the Cham community.

A tourism brand for a destination is not solely created through marketing initiatives or stunning landscapes, but is truly defined by the experiences that visitors carry back with them. Lam Dong can enhance its reputation as a reliable, professional, and inviting destination only when the spirit of serving as tourism ambassadors is embraced by all, from local officials to frontline service personnel.

Throughout Lam Dong's tourism development journey, every resident and tourism professional plays a role in shaping the destination's identity. When people promote tourism with pride in their cultural heritage, they are not merely selling products—they are sharing the very soul of their homeland.
