Encourage visitors to experience a unique tourism product
The accident at Cu Lan Village in 2023 and the recent incident at the Bau Trang area (now part of Lam Dong Province) clearly demonstrate that the tourism industry needs to take stronger and more practical actions to ensure tourist safety. This will allow visitors to fully enjoy and experience more unique tourism products with peace of mind.

Adventure tourism’s benefits
In recent years, the provincial tourism sector has focused on developing adventure tourism. Many localities have formed many attractive products that are gradually becoming recognizable tourism brands. However, experts warn that before expanding adventure tourism, it is essential to carefully assess its potential impacts on the tourism industry and set development priorities based on each locality’s strengths and advantages.
Lam Dong, known as a leading destination for “unique and distinctive” tourism products, possesses significant advantages in terrain and climate, along with hundreds of famous tourist sites stretching from the Central Highlands to the coastal areas, attracting both domestic and international visitors. These favorable conditions have allowed Lam Dong’s tourism sector to develop various forms of adventure and sports tourism, such as jungle trekking, mountain climbing, off-road cycling, white-water rafting, paragliding, windsurfing, and off-road driving across sand dunes.
Adventure tourism is a highly specialized form of travel that requires participants to have good health, experience, and survival skills, while also accepting relatively high costs. Although it was once considered unsuitable for the mass market, this type of tourism has increasingly attracted a growing number of travelers—especially young people—who are eager to challenge themselves and experience nature in a more adventurous way.
Since 2017, the locality has licensed 10 businesses to operate adventure tourism services such as waterfall abseiling, white-water rafting, kayaking, ziplining, artificial rock climbing, and trekking. These activities are currently conducted at six locations: Tuyen Lam Lake, Datanla Waterfall, the Golden Valley tourist area, Madagui tourist area, Dasar Waterfall, and the Da Don River. However, despite its rapid development, the adventure tourism sector still faces challenges, as occasional incidents and accidents continue to occur, highlighting the need for stricter management and enhanced safety measures.
In recent years, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has ramped up training programs for adventure tour guides, drivers, and tourism staff, focusing on refining professional expertise, hospitality standards and emergency response skills. Such activities are vital to keeping pace with the rapid growth of local tourism, which has seen a surge in arrivals and an escalating demand for high-octane travel experiences.

Develop professional tourism
Businesses in the Bau Trang – Mui Ne area are doubling down on safety and professionalism, insisting that adventure tourism must be built on local strengths. To support this transition, Lam Dong has coordinated with national agencies to develop a National Standard for Adventure Tourism, ensuring professional and sustainable development of the industry.

It is believed that with standardized safety regulations, professional staff training, and strong cooperation between authorities and businesses, Lam Dong has great potential to become one of Vietnam’s leading adventure tourism destinations. This will allow tourists to confidently enjoy “unique and thrilling” tourism products without worry, even in the context of increasing climate-related risks.
