Extensive Communication Efforts to Protect the Marine and Island Environment
The Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Lam Dong province has stepped up communication efforts on marine and island environmental protection, thereby raising awareness and driving positive changes to protect the marine environment and promote efforts to combat IUU fishing among fishermen.

Raising Awareness Among Coastal Communities
Over the past year, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has intensified communication activities on marine and island environmental protection, contributing to heightened awareness and positive behavioral change among fishermen, particularly in efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Through direct outreach activities such as leaflet distribution, fishermen’s awareness of legal responsibilities and environmental protection has been significantly improved.
Integrated Communication on Marine Economic Development and Sovereignty
The department has implemented a wide range of communication initiatives focusing on marine economic development, coastal tourism linked with socio-economic growth, and the assurance of national defense and security. These efforts also emphasized international cooperation on maritime issues, dissemination of policies on marine resource protection, support for fishermen, and the safeguarding of livelihoods in coastal areas.
At the same time, proactive measures have been taken to counter misinformation and distorted narratives related to the East Sea, helping to guide public opinion accurately and promptly.
Strengthening Legal Awareness and IUU Prevention
Special attention has been given to disseminating fisheries laws and regulations on IUU fishing prevention. In coordination with relevant agencies and coastal localities, the department distributed leaflets and communication materials to enhance fishermen’s understanding of legal compliance, while reinforcing maritime sovereignty and coastal border security.
Diverse Media Channels and Grassroots Communication
The department has also regularly disseminated communication materials produced by the Authority of Grassroots Information through local information systems, many of which focus on marine and island issues. Specifically, 19 radio programs were broadcast to promote the Law on the Vietnam Coast Guard; 9 feature reports highlighted the building of peaceful, friendly, cooperative, and developing borders; and 17 reports focused on marine and island communication and the protection of Vietnam’s legitimate rights and interests in the East Sea. Numerous additional reports and short features addressed national border protection and marine environmental conservation.
Fishermen Respond Positively to Practical Communication
Nguyen Huu Thanh, a fisherman from Phan Thiet Ward who frequently attends IUU-prevention communication sessions, shared:
“Thanks to these visual and engaging communication activities—watching documentaries, receiving leaflets, and listening to clear explanations from functional forces—fishermen better understand the regulations and are more aware of the need to comply with the law and avoid IUU violations.”
Promoting Maritime Knowledge Through Reading and Digital Engagement
In response to Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day 2025, the department donated bookcases to My Thanh Primary School and Ham Can Secondary School, including publications on Vietnam’s seas and islands to support students’ reading culture. Additionally, the department coordinated the organization of the online contest “Learning About Vietnam’s Seas and Islands” to enhance public knowledge and further promote IUU prevention among fishermen.
Toward Stronger, More Modern Communication in 2026
According to Khuc Thi Thoi, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in 2026 the department will continue to strengthen communication on integrated marine resource management and marine and island environmental protection. The focus will remain on implementing IUU prevention tasks as directed by central and provincial authorities.
Communication methods will be renewed and diversified, with legal dissemination tailored to specific target groups such as fishermen and enterprises. Greater emphasis will be placed on digital platforms and social media to reinforce anti-IUU messaging. These efforts aim to bring about clear improvements in awareness and legal compliance, encourage fishermen to commit to non-violation, and promote timely reporting of violations for effective prevention and enforcement.
