Gathering Autumn’s Golden Hues to Welcome the Flower Festival

In October, Da Lat reveals its autumn colors through a gentle chill distilled in layers of mist and the proud splashes of color displayed by flowers and foliage. As the grand festival approaches, the mountain town is donning a new look, not only through the untamed beauty of nature but also through the vibrant rhythm woven by countless dedicated hands working quietly behind the scenes. From hillsides ablaze with wild sunflowers to greenhouses glowing through the night, the human spirit and the soul of flowers are coming together in harmony, patiently counting down the days to create a proud symphony of the highlands ahead of the opening of the 2026 Da Lat Flower Festival.

Autumn in Da Lat doesn’t signal its arrival with the sound of leaves crunching underfoot on mossy trails. Instead, this mountain town stimulates the senses in a unique manner: the morning chill combines with a layer of mist that drifts above the blue lakes, as colors and scents gradually emerge through the fog.
With golden wild sunflowers flowing like silk over the basalt slopes, the vibrant orange-red leaves of ancient maple trees near the upper parts of Tuyen Lam Lake, and the early-winter pink grass fields glistening with morning dew, the scenery reveals itself like a colorful canvas, playing the first lively notes in anticipation of the Da Lat Flower Festival.

I decided to take a pause, step back, and follow the distant chiming of church bells into town while seeking the romantic essence of autumn.

Mornings in October on the outskirts of Da Lat are shrouded in mist. The soft chill against the skin feels delicate and reserved, like the lightest caress of fall.

The early morning fog drifts slowly over the azure waters of Xuan Huong Lake, as if caught between fading into the gentle waves and clinging to the last traces of night.

The church bells toll softly, their pure, elegant tones reverberating throughout the valley and awakening the dewdrops perched on fresh pine needles.

In the mist of October, the winding suburban streets acquire an extraordinary calmness. The traveler's steps meander gently around every curve, gradually absorbing the mountain town's brisk tempo, as if stepping into the serene prelude of the holiday season.

As twilight descends, I walk along the path from Trai Mat to Cau Dat. Golden rays spill like honey across the basalt slopes, enveloping the suburban sky in a warm palette. In the misty valleys, wild sunflower plants have woven themselves into the very essence of this land.

Having lived his whole life on the breezy hills, Huu Hung, a resident of Cau Dat in Xuan Truong–Da Lat Ward, can barely recall when these magnificent flowers first took root and began to thrive.

Needing neither human care nor a mere drop of water or a pinch of fertilizer, wild sunflowers peacefully draw on the nourishing essence concealed beneath the basalt soil, withstanding the erratic patterns of rain and sunlight.

Then, as if in response to nature's seasonal rhythm, they explode into vibrant golden blooms, coloring every path and narrow lane in striking yellow.

As he gazes at the seemingly endless fields of flowers, Hung's eyes glimmer with the pure joy of a highland dweller.

"People in this area have been used to seeing tea plantations and coffee fields concealed beneath layers of mist for generations. On regular days, the village roads are nearly empty, with just a few shadows stretching across the hillsides. However, as late autumn transitions into early winter, and wild sunflowers ignite the mountainsides with their golden colors, visitors from all over start to arrive. Their laughter, chatter, and the excited shouts of children break the age-old silence of this mountain town," he remarked.

It is the rustic, wild charm of the sunflowers on the outskirts of Da Lat that attracts and mesmerizes countless first-time travelers to this highland destination.

Stopping beside a brilliant stretch of flowers along the mountainside, young visitors Le Minh Hieu and Le Thu Huyen, who came from Hanoi, stand spellbound before nature's tapestry, unable to hide the delight shining in their eyes.

Minh Hieu expressed his feelings, his voice harmonizing with the cool atmosphere of the mountain town:

"Whenever we explore a new place, our top priority is to find areas with fresh air, where we can hear nature’s breath and the sounds of flora. We consider ourselves extremely lucky that our first visit to Da Lat coincided perfectly with the peak of the wild sunflower season. Inhaling the pure, crisp mountain air while taking in the unrestrained, vibrant golden flowers sprawling across the hills has been a wonderful experience. It feels like nature is giving us a warm embrace, a gift for those who truly love and value beauty."

Along the city's main streets, the rhythm of this flower-filled urban landscape is coming together in a quiet yet brilliant dance. Vivid red poinsettias, clusters of lantana and New Guinea impatiens are carefully trimmed and tended.

Workers quietly nurture each flower bed, patiently waiting for the day when they will bloom alongside the wild sunflowers. They are not merely planting flowers; they are cultivating the pride of a welcoming city.

If the natural flower carpets lining the streets are a completed portrait of wild sunflower beauty, autumn's journey now leads travelers away from the windswept hillsides and down towards valleys glowing throughout the night.

There, the lifeblood of modern agricultural technology flows vibrantly through the hands of dedicated growers, who patiently nurture young green shoots as they await the day these flowers will make their way into the city to welcome the grand celebration of the 2026 Da Lat Flower Festival.
