Lam Dong and Champasak Connect Heritage, Advance Sustainable Green Tourism Cooperation
Built on the longstanding friendship between Vietnam and Laos, the partnership between Lam Dong and Champasak has continued to expand in recent years across culture, tourism, education, and people-to-people diplomacy.
Connecting Heritage, Strengthening Friendship
Located in southern Laos and bordering Thailand and Cambodia, Champasak Province covers more than 15,400 square kilometers and is home to nearly 622,400 residents. The province is widely recognized as one of Laos’ leading tourism destinations, offering a rich combination of natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and traditional lifestyles.
A highlight of Champasak is the ancient temple complex of Wat Phou, which was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. The site reflects the cultural and architectural legacy of the Khmer civilization while demonstrating the historical interaction between Hinduism and Lao Buddhism.
Beyond its spiritual significance, Wat Phou has become an important cultural symbol of Champasak and a major attraction for pilgrims and international visitors alike.

Champasak is also renowned for the Bolaven Plateau, famous for its coffee plantations, cool climate, and spectacular waterfalls, including Tad Fane and Tad Yuang. Meanwhile, the Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands) region along the Mekong River offers visitors a tranquil landscape shaped by river life and traditional local communities.
The province preserves a rich cultural identity through its diverse ethnic communities. In addition to the majority Lao Loum population, ethnic groups such as Laven, Alak, and Katu continue to maintain distinct languages, customs, traditional attire, and cultural practices.
Theravada Buddhist temples, year-round religious festivals, traditional Lam Vong dances, Lao folk music, and regional cuisine featuring sticky rice, spicy papaya salad, and Mekong fish specialties contribute to the unique appeal of the province.

Shared Values Create a Foundation for Cooperation
While Champasak represents one of Laos’ most culturally significant destinations, Lam Dong is recognized as one of Vietnam’s leading eco-tourism and highland resort regions.

The province is distinguished by its temperate climate, vast forests, lakes, coastal landscapes, and the cultural diversity of 49 ethnic groups living together across the region.
Both localities share a common vision centered on:
- Heritage preservation
- Green tourism development
- Environmental protection
- Cultural conservation
- Sustainable community development
These shared priorities provide a strong foundation for deeper cooperation in tourism and cultural exchange.

Expanding Sustainable Tourism Partnerships
According to Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Acting Director of the Lam Dong Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, both provinces possess distinctive natural and cultural resources that position them well for sustainable tourism development.
"Both Lam Dong and Champasak have unique natural and cultural assets and share similar visions for green and sustainable tourism. Strengthening connections between the two provinces not only helps promote destinations and attract visitors but also creates opportunities for people to better understand each other's culture and way of life.", she shared.
Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc emphasized that cultural and tourism cooperation programs are designed to foster long-term, practical collaboration while extending the spirit of Vietnam–Laos friendship to businesses, tourism stakeholders, and local communities.

Building Cross-Border Tourism Opportunities
Under the cooperation theme:"Connecting Heritage – Advancing Together – Toward Green and Sustainable Tourism", the two provinces have agreed to implement a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening tourism collaboration.
Key areas of cooperation include:
- Expanding tourism promotion and destination marketing activities.
- Sharing tourism information, images, and promotional videos across official media platforms.

- Encouraging travel companies to develop cross-border tourism products.
- Expanding tourism packages targeting ASEAN and international markets.
- Strengthening business networking and investment cooperation.
- Enhancing professional tourism training and workforce development.
These initiatives are expected to create stronger tourism linkages while opening new opportunities for cultural exchange and regional economic growth.

Promoting Heritage Through Tourism
Tedavanh Keophilavan, Director of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Champasak Province, expressed confidence that deeper cooperation would generate attractive tourism products that showcase the strengths of both destinations:
"We believe that connecting the cultural heritage, natural resources, and people of Champasak and Lam Dong will create compelling tourism experiences and help introduce both provinces to a wider international audience."
Her remarks underscore the growing recognition that tourism can serve not only as an economic driver but also as an effective platform for cultural diplomacy.
Tourism as a Bridge Between Peoples
As regional integration continues to deepen across Southeast Asia, tourism is increasingly viewed as a powerful instrument for strengthening mutual understanding and people-to-people connections.
With complementary tourism resources, shared commitments to sustainability, and a longstanding friendship between Vietnam and Laos, Lam Dong and Champasak are steadily building a model of cooperation that combines heritage conservation, cultural exchange, and sustainable development.
Through continued collaboration in tourism, culture, and public diplomacy, both provinces aim to preserve their unique identities while contributing to the enduring friendship between the Vietnamese and Lao peoples for generations to come.
