Lam Dong Chess Player Wins Gold for Vietnam at Asian Youth Championship

Young chess player Nguyen Tung Quan of Lam Dong helped Vietnam secure 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the boys' under-14 team events at the 28th Asian Youth Chess Championship 2026, held in Shenzhen, China.

The annual championship took place from July 15 to 25, attracting around 930 young players from 30 countries and territories across Asia.

Vietnam fielded a team of 80 players, competing in nearly all age groups and categories. Representing Lam Dong were coach Cao Sang and player Nguyen Tung Quan.

Competing for the Vietnamese national team, Nguyen Tung Quan and his teammates delivered an outstanding performance, winning 3 team medals in the boys' under-14 division:

  • Gold – Standard Chess Team
  • Gold – Blitz Chess Team
  • Silver – Rapid Chess Team

The team's most impressive achievement came in the blitz team event, where Nguyen Tung Quan scored 7 points, while teammates Nguyen Vu Bao Lam and Le Anh Tu each earned 6.5 points, giving Vietnam a total of 20 points to claim the gold medal.

Host nation China finished second with 19 points, while Russia won the bronze medal with 18.5 points.

The Under-14 team's success contributed to Vietnam's outstanding overall performance at the championship. The Vietnamese team finished first overall, collecting 63 medals, including 27 gold, 18 silver, and 18 bronze, to top the standings ahead of competitors from 29 other countries and territories.
