Lam Dong Inaugurates Lien Khuong Airport Runway and Taxiway Rehabilitation Project

After more than 5 months of suspension, the Lien Khuong International Airport Runway and Taxiway Rehabilitation Project was officially inaugurated, marking the resumption of operations at the airport.

On the morning of August 19, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), in coordination with the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee, held an inauguration ceremony for the Lien Khuong Airport Runway and Taxiway Rehabilitation Project.

Attending the ceremony were Ho Van Muoi, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Lam Dong Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Uong Viet Dung, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam; and Nguyen Cao Cuong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ACV

Attending the inauguration ceremony on behalf of central agencies were Senior Lieutenant General Pham Truong Son, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army; Uong Viet Dung, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam; Colonel Vu Van Quan, Deputy Director of Department A08 under the Ministry of Public Security; and representatives of ministries and central agencies.

Among the international guests was Yang Miao, Commercial Counselor at the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Ho Chi Minh City.

Representing Lam Dong Province were Ho Van Muoi, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Dang Hong Sy, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; Luu Van Trung, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Council; Pham Thi Phuc, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Lam Dong Province; vice chairpersons of the Provincial People's Committee; and leaders of provincial departments, agencies and localities.

Also attending were members of the Standing Board of the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Council, the Provincial People's Committee, representatives of departments, agencies and localities, as well as delegates from neighboring provinces and cities, including Can Tho, Dak Lak, Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City.

Representing the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) were Nguyen Cao Cuong, Chairman of the ACV Board of Directors, and other members of the corporation.

The Runway and Taxiway Rehabilitation Project, invested in by ACV, broke ground in Duc Trong Commune, Lam Dong Province, on March 4, 2026. It is a Grade I aviation transport project with a total investment of VND 1.032 trillion.

The project involved the rehabilitation of the entire runway and taxiway system, runway end safety areas, technical infrastructure and flight operations support equipment. Its key component was the comprehensive rehabilitation of Runway 09-27, measuring 3,250 meters in length and 45 meters in width.

After more than five months of intensive construction, the Lien Khuong Airport Runway and Taxiway Rehabilitation Project was officially inaugurated and put into operation. The event is of significant importance to Lam Dong's socio-economic development.

During the initial period following its reopening, Lien Khuong Airport is expected to handle 36 to 40 flights per day and serve approximately 6,800 passengers daily. Passenger traffic through the airport is estimated to reach around 816,000 in the final four months of 2026.

The current domestic air network connects Da Lat with Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Vinh, Hai Phong and Can Tho. On the international network, the Da Lat-Kuala Lumpur route is expected to operate 4 flights per week, while the Da Lat-Singapore route is scheduled to resume in December 2026 with 3 weekly flights.

The reopening of Lien Khuong Airport is considered particularly significant as Lam Dong prepares to host a series of major events later this year, including the 11th Da Lat-Lam Dong Flower Festival, the 3rd Vietnam Brocade Culture Festival and the Lang Biang International Music Festival 2026.

In the long term, the project provides a solid foundation for realizing the plan to upgrade Lien Khuong Airport to Category 4E by 2030, with a vision toward 2050.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ho Van Muoi, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Lam Dong Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, emphasized that Lien Khuong Airport has long been regarded as a key transportation lifeline for Lam Dong Province. The airport serves as an aerial gateway connecting the Lam Vien Plateau with major economic centers across Vietnam and internationally.

In recent years, alongside the strong growth of tourism and services, passenger traffic through the airport has at times reached nearly 3 million passengers annually, exceeding its current design capacity.

This demonstrates Lam Dong's growing appeal and stature, while also highlighting the urgent need to upgrade airfield infrastructure to ensure absolute safety and stable, sustainable operations.

The Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee affirmed that the rehabilitation project represented a comprehensive overhaul of the runway, meeting the operational requirements of new-generation aircraft while ensuring safety and efficiency.

The reopening of Lien Khuong Airport today is significant not only for the aviation sector but also for restoring connectivity, passenger flows and opportunities for cooperation, investment, trade and tourism. More broadly, it marks the beginning of a new development space for Lam Dong.

The head of the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee noted that during the first seven months of 2026, despite the temporary closure of Lien Khuong Airport, Lam Dong's tourism sector continued to demonstrate strong appeal. The province welcomed approximately 14.2 million visitors, while total tourism revenue exceeded VND 40 trillion, up 22% compared with the same period in 2025.

These results demonstrate Lam Dong's strong appeal and, in particular, the substantial demand among visitors for improved connectivity to the province.

The resumption of operations at Lien Khuong Airport will help drive Lam Dong's socio-economic development

The reopening of Lien Khuong not only meets the growing travel demand of residents and visitors but also restores a vital flow for Lam Dong's economy. It will help expand tourism markets, promote tourism, trade and services, attract investment and strengthen connectivity with major economic and tourism centers both domestically and internationally.

On this occasion, the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee awarded certificates of merit to numerous organizations and individuals for their efforts and contributions to the implementation of the project.

Following the completion of the project, Lien Khuong Airport will retain its Category 4D status and continue to serve both civil and military aviation, including domestic and international flights. A key achievement of the project is the runway's upgraded pavement classification number of 830/R/C/W/T.

As a result, Lien Khuong Airport has completely eliminated previous weight restrictions and is now capable of accommodating Code C and Code D aircraft, including the B757, B737, A300, A321, A320 and ATR72...
