Lam Dong are capitalizing on a favorable fixture schedule in the 2026 National Second Division, with five of their six first-leg matches at home, as they push for promotion to the First Division.

Favorable or risky schedule?

With three promotion spots available among 14 teams, the theoretical chances are evenly distributed. The teams are split into two groups: Group A features northern and central sides, while Lam Dong compete in Group B alongside Quang Ngai, Dak Lak, Tay Ninh, Truong Giang Gia Dinh, Vinh Long, and Mekong Can Tho.

In practice, however, promotion remains highly competitive. Lam Dong have spent 15 years in the Second Division since their last relegation, highlighting the challenge of breaking through.

The compressed format—roughly two months with two matches per week—leaves little margin for slow starts. Early momentum is critical to staying in contention.

This season’s schedule presents a mixed scenario. Lam Dong play five of six first-leg matches at home but will face the reverse in the return leg, with five away fixtures—potentially decisive ones.

The immediate benefit is reduced travel in the first phase, allowing the team to focus on preparation and consistency. The downside is a demanding second leg, where away performances could determine qualification for the finals.

Maximizing home-ground advantage

Lam Dong’s stated objective is clear: reach the final round and secure promotion. Head coach Tran Van Toan acknowledged concerns over the schedule but emphasized a pragmatic approach.

“We aim to make the most of our home matches first. Results matter more than scorelines—we adapt to each opponent and focus on winning,” Toan said.

According to Le Tri Dung, head of the provincial training and competition center, the team has undergone positive changes, including a revamped coaching staff and strengthened squad.

“We must fully exploit our home advantages—altitude, climate, and fan support—to secure maximum points in the first leg and ease pressure later,” Dung said

So far, Lam Dong have executed that strategy effectively. The team has won all three home matches: 1-0 against Dak Lak, 2-1 over Truong Giang Gia Dinh, and 3-0 against Vinh Long. They also secured a 1-1 draw away at Quang Ngai.

With one match fewer played, Lam Dong sit second in Group B on 10 points, trailing Tay Ninh (12 points from four wins). Truong Giang Gia Dinh follow closely with nine points.

Two more home fixtures remain this month—against Tay Ninh on April 19 and Mekong Can Tho on April 25.
