Lien Khuong Airport Set to Reopen After Final Checks on Upgraded Runway
After months of closure for a major infrastructure upgrade, Lien Khuong International Airport has entered its final commissioning phase, with technical flight inspections now underway ahead of the airport's scheduled reopening on August 19, 2026.
The successful calibration of navigation and airfield lighting systems marks the final step before commercial operations resume, restoring one of the Central Highlands' most important aviation gateways.
Final technical inspection before reopening
Construction of the Lien Khuong International Airport Runway and Taxiway Rehabilitation Project began on March 4, 2026.
The project includes the reconstruction of the airport's 3,250-meter-long, 45 meters wide concrete runway, together with 7.5-meter-wide asphalt shoulders on both sides.
According to Le Anh Tuan, an official with the project management board, the project remained on schedule despite challenges posed by material price fluctuations and supply chain constraints during the early construction period.
The runway has now reached 100% completion, while concrete works on the parallel taxiway have been substantially finished.
Advanced navigation systems installed
To meet international aviation safety standards, the upgraded airport has been equipped with two key navigation systems:
- Instrument Landing System (ILS) for precision approaches.
- A new airfield lighting system designed to improve aircraft guidance during low-visibility operations.
Technical crews have also completed final runway markings in preparation for flight calibration.
International aviation specialists have been working on-site to configure and verify the airport's precision navigation equipment.
The airport's modern approach lighting system has also been fully installed.
Meanwhile, construction of the new parallel taxiway is nearing completion.
Commercial flights to resume on August 19
Following successful technical certification, Lien Khuong International Airport is scheduled to resume commercial operations on August 19, 2026.
The airport is expected to handle 36 to 40 flights per day, reconnecting Lam Dong with major domestic destinations including:
- Ho Chi Minh City
- Hanoi
- Da Nang
- Vinh
- Can Tho
- Hai Phong
International services to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, are also scheduled to resume.
Provincial authorities view the reopening as a major step toward restoring tourism, trade and business connectivity across Vietnam's Central Highlands.
Intensive construction to meet deadline
Construction crews worked around the clock during the final phase of the project to ensure completion on schedule.
Workers also completed the installation of runway edge lighting, one of the final operational requirements before certification.
With technical inspections nearing completion, Lien Khuong International Airport is preparing to reopen as Lam Dong strengthens air connectivity, supports tourism recovery and expands international access to the province under its destination strategy, "Lam Dong – The Journey of Sea, Flowers and Highlands."
