A Journey of Discipline and Ambition

Nguyen Chi Thanh High School for the Gifted in Nam Gia Nghia Ward recently celebrated another academic success as Nguyen Quang Bao earned a scholarship to the University of Connecticut (UConn), one of the leading public research universities in the United States.

The achievement reflects years of discipline, perseverance and a determination to push beyond his limits. Bao has built an impressive academic record, earning a SAT score of 1,530, an IELTS score of 7.0 and maintaining a GPA above 9.3 throughout high school.

His achievements include a gold medal at the SIMSO National Math Olympiad, a silver medal at the FMO International Math Olympiad, a silver medal in the National Violympic Mathematics Competition and an international gold medal at the 2025 Moscow International Salon of Inventions for a project on machine learning and data analytics.

Bao also received a consolation prize at the 2024 National Youth and Children's Creativity Competition, a third prize at the provincial Science and Engineering Competition and a second prize at the provincial Youth Creativity Competition. In addition, he was recognized as an Outstanding Student at the provincial level and maintained an excellent academic record throughout his three years of high school.

According to Bao, the key to achieving those results has been effective time management and maintaining discipline in pursuing his goals. “I take part in quite a few competitions, so I have to prioritize what matters most at each stage. I usually focus on the nearest competition or the one with the greatest significance, concentrating first on improving my weaker areas before expanding my knowledge further. In class, I make sure I understand the theory thoroughly and complete all assignments. For subjects that require deeper research, I actively seek additional materials and ask teachers for guidance,” he said.

Bao credited thorough preparation and a healthy mindset as key factors behind his performance in major competitions.

“Learning is a long-term process, so I try not to put too much pressure on myself before competitions. Staying calm and confident is what matters most. Competitions are great chances to learn from talented peers and remind me that there are always people striving to improve themselves. That helps me mature and appreciate the value of learning” Bao said.

No matter how much he has accomplished, he has never let success distract him from his goals. He is constantly looking for opportunities to learn, conduct research and improve himself. Watching his passion for learning is truly inspiring - in many ways, it motivates us as teachers as well,” Mai said.

Beyond his strong academic performance, Bao has actively engaged in scientific research, extracurricular activities and youth initiatives. His initiative, discipline and sense of responsibility have earned him the respect of both teachers and classmates.
