Mui Ne fishing village, located in the heart of Mui Ne Ward, Lam Dong Province, is much more than a bustling coastal settlement — it is a “living museum” of Vietnam’s maritime culture. Here, the rhythm of daily life has long been intertwined with the ocean, creating a vivid tapestry of history, beliefs, and tradition way of life that continues to captivate locals and visitors alike.

Before dawn breaks, visitors are welcomed by the lively scene of the fish market. As boats return from night fishing, hundreds of locals gather on the sandy shore to trade fresh seafood. The sounds of lively bargaining, joyful chatter, and crashing waves paint a dynamic portrait of coastal life.

Sacred whale worship

In the spiritual life of Mui Ne’s fishermen, the whale—known as “Cá Ông”—is revered as Nam Hai, the sea deity and protector of sailors against storms and rough waters. Whenever a whale died and drifted ashore lifeless, the entire village holds solemn rituals and a ceremonial burial to honor it.

Mr. Tran Van Hong, head manager of Binh An fishing village, recalls: “The first fisherman to discover a whale’s body must hold mourning rites for three years. There were times when we buried whales weighing up to 15 tons.” This enduring belief reflects the fishermen’s gratitude and bond with the ocean.
