Mui Ne: From Fishing Village to Global Tourism Hub

Tourism awakens the coastal land

After 51 years after liberation, Mui Ne has undergone a remarkable transformation—from a pristine coastal area into an internationally recognized tourism destination.

Modern infrastructure, diverse services, and its distinctive natural beauty have helped Mui Ne establish its position on the global tourism map, attracting an increasing number of visitors from around the world.

Recalling the past, Pham Khac Binh (born in 1958, Ham Tien 1 neighborhood, Mui Ne Ward) shared:
“Back then, most people relied on the sea for their livelihood. Life was tough, and some had to combine fishing and farming just to make ends meet.”

In 1995, the total solar eclipse opened up opportunities to unlock Mui Ne’s tourism potential. Since then, the area has become a key highlight of Phan Thiet tourism and the coastal region of Lam Dong following the provincial merger.

Pham Thi Bong (Quarter 4, Mui Ne Ward) said:
“With tourism development, many construction projects have been invested, bringing more work to my family. I also started a small business and learned foreign languages to communicate with tourists. Our income has improved, and our children are studying harder to keep up with new opportunities.”

Not only older generations, but young people in Mui Ne’s fishing village have also quickly adapted to the rapid growth of tourism. Many have pursued education and become tourism professionals, contributing to the development of their hometown.

Nguyen Chi Cuong (Ham Tien 2 neighborhood) is among those who dared to change and integrate. After years of experience, he shifted to investing in transport services supplying food, vegetables, and materials to wholesale markets and tourism establishments in Mui Ne.

He shared:
“As tourism developed, I spent two years gaining practical experience before deciding to study tourism professionally. After graduating, I worked for over five years at 4–5 star resorts, including high-end properties in Khanh Hoa.”

Infrastructure breakthroughs, reaching global stature

After more than half a century, trade, services, and tourism activities in Mui Ne have developed steadily, gradually affirming its position.

Accommodation facilities and dining services are thriving, contributing to the goal of turning Mui Ne Ward into a national tourism center and building the brand of a “Green – Friendly – Civilized – Modern” destination.

Tim Grosse, Regional Director for Vietnam and Cambodia at Go Vacation Vietnam, affirmed:
“Mui Ne is a destination chosen by many travelers. It offers quality hotels and beaches suitable for year-round relaxation.”

The rapid growth in visitor numbers has driven the expansion of trade and tourism services, creating jobs for local workers and enhancing the urban landscape.

According to the People’s Committee of Mui Ne Ward, while the area welcomed only around 53,000 visitors in 1995, it now attracts over one million visitors annually.

Mui Ne was awakened following the 1995 solar eclipse. Its dramatic transformation has turned this once-remote fishing village into a tourism hotspot both domestically and internationally.

In the near future, the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee will announce the master plan for the Mui Ne National Tourism Area through 2040, with a vision to 2050. Mui Ne is expected to make a strong leap forward, further affirming its position on the global tourism map with a new stature.
