Organic farming grows in Lam Dong

Taking advantage of ecological zones 1,000 - 1,500 meters above sea level, many Lam Dong farms are restoring soil fertility to grow “natural vegetables” and increase land value.

Combining farming experience with modern technology

Vi Xua Farm in P’re Village, Duc Trong Commune, covers 20 hectares, with half of the area planted with pine forests. The remaining land has been used for decades to cultivate naturally grown vegetables, roots, and fruits. The farm has become part of a traceable supply chain linked with businesses and cooperatives both inside and outside Lam Dong Province.

Nguyen Thi My Ai, a farmer, said the site continuously harvests and rotates more than 30 varieties of organic vegetables, roots, and fruits across more than 4 hectares of open-field cultivation.

“The organic vegetables at Vi Xua Farm follow updated farming techniques, including loose soil beds, organic fertilizers, irrigation water enriched with microorganisms, and manual weed removal. Harvesting and replanting cycles usually take around 30 days,” Ai said.

To apply new scientific and technological methods, Ai’s daughter, a biotechnology engineer, joined the farm to cultivate beneficial microorganisms on-site. These microorganisms help improve soil quality, suppress pathogens, accelerate the decomposition of organic matter, and strengthen crop resistance.

According to Au Truong Thanh, owner of Vi Xua Farm, natural grass and vegetation are allowed to regrow for more than 30 days after each harvest. The roots, stems, and leaves are then plowed back into the soil with organic fertilizers, beneficial microorganisms, and antagonistic fungi to nourish the next crop cycle.

Although organic yields are only 40 - 50% of conventional output, prices are over 50% higher.

Expanding specialized organic farming areas

In addition to established domestic customers and distribution networks, organic vegetables, roots, and fruits from Vi Xua Farm have begun joining supply chains linked with Nguyen Minh Clean Vegetable Cooperative and another local organic agricultural enterprise, opening up broader market opportunities and more stable prices.

Nguyen Van Cuong, a representative coordinating the supply chain, said the total area under stable output contracts currently produces 8 - 9 tons of organic vegetables, roots, and fruits each month across more than 7 hectares. This includes 3 hectares of greenhouses in Nam Ban Lam Ha and 4 hectares from Vi Xua Farm.

According to statistics, Lam Dong Province now has nearly 2,100 hectares of organic crops, including vegetables, mushrooms, rice, fruit trees, tea, coffee, macadamia, medicinal herbs, cashew, and forage grass.

Over the past five years, the Lam Dong Agricultural Extension Center has supported nearly 10 organizations and individuals in completing procedures to obtain certifications for organic agricultural trademarks and logos from the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam.

The center has also regularly organized trade promotion activities nationwide to expand market opportunities for organic agricultural products.

The province’s Organic Agriculture Development Program has created a solid foundation in technical processes, effective production models, improved agricultural competitiveness, and the protection of both the ecological environment and human health.

Pham Thanh Son

With the goal of making Lam Dong a national leader in organic agriculture, Pham Thanh Son called for stronger coordination among authorities and sectors, particularly through more timely financial support and synchronized policy solutions.

The Lam Dong Agricultural Extension Center is currently developing an organic crop development plan for 2026 - 2030 covering around 11,200 hectares. The program aims to diversify products, improve farmers’ incomes, and support the overall growth of the province’s agricultural sector.
