The Phu Quy Special Administrative Zone (Lam Dong Province) is steadily turning its development aspirations into reality. From a once largely untouched “pearl island,” Phu Quy is positioning itself as a green tourism destination and a promising hub for the marine economy, anchored by distinctive local products.

Awakening Potential, Breaking Out to Sea

Located 56 nautical miles southeast of Phan Thiet, the Phu Quy Special Administrative Zone was formed through the merger of Long Hai, Ngu Phung and Tam Thanh communes. Covering more than 18 km² and home to approximately 32,000 residents, the island holds significant potential for marine economic development, particularly in tourism and fisheries.

In recent years, visitor numbers to Phu Quy have grown steadily. From just over 40,000 arrivals in 2021—when international visitors were minimal—the figure rose to nearly 155,000 in 2025, including close to 4,000 foreign tourists. Notably, the 2022–2023 period saw a surge in growth, underscoring the island’s increasing appeal.

Phu Quy’s ability to captivate visitors lies in its well-preserved natural charm: tranquil sunrises at the sovereignty flagpole, crystal-clear waters at Bai Nho – Ganh Hang, and the serene setting of Linh Son Pagoda atop Cao Cat Mountain.

In particular, Hon Tranh—an islet located about half a nautical mile from Phu Quy—is emerging as one of the most attractive destinations. With fine white sand beaches, vibrant coral ecosystems, and unique check-in spots such as the “Infinity Pool” and To Vo Gate, it draws tens of thousands of visitors annually, especially young travelers.

The island is also home to spiritual and cultural sites, including Tran Bac Shrine, Gia Long Well, and the small Hon Trung islet, located roughly 100 meters to the southeast.

This is my second visit to Phu Quy, yet it still feels entirely new. Despite the growth of tourism services, the island has retained its pristine character. I am especially impressed by Hon Tranh.

During the peak tourism season, local authorities have proactively coordinated with businesses to increase transport capacity and ensure visitor safety.

Towards a Green Island and Sustainable Tourism

In its development strategy, Phu Quy identifies tourism as a key economic sector, aiming to become a standout destination in the eastern part of Lam Dong Province.

The locality prioritizes investment in high-end resort projects linked to experiential offerings such as marine sports, coral diving, culinary tourism and leisure. According to planning orientations, Hon Tranh will be developed with synchronized tourism infrastructure, including piers, docking facilities, transport systems and visitor services.

Alongside tourism, the marine economy remains a core pillar. Offshore aquaculture has expanded significantly, with around 70 farming facilities providing stable livelihoods for local residents while also creating a distinctive tourism experience. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood directly on floating farms and take part in activities such as diving and ecological exploration.

Looking ahead, Phu Quy plans to expand its development space with a high-end integrated resort project in Thuong Chau hamlet, covering approximately 50 hectares. The project is expected to serve as a major catalyst in elevating the local tourism sector.

However, challenges remain, particularly unstable electricity infrastructure and freshwater supply. Connecting the island to the national power grid and ensuring efficient water resource management are pressing issues that require early resolution.

During a recent working visit, Lam Dong Vice Chairman Dinh Van Tuan praised Phu Quy’s tourism potential, especially its coastal advantages, with pristine beaches suited to a wide range of tourism offerings—from exploration and adventure to high-end resorts.

He emphasized the need for a well-structured development strategy that enhances both the quantity and quality of services, noting that community-based tourism is a suitable direction for future growth.

In practice, local residents have actively engaged in tourism activities, contributing to an increasingly complete service ecosystem. The special zone currently hosts dozens of accommodation facilities and homestays capable of meeting the growing demand of visitors.

Transport infrastructure has also improved significantly, with passenger vessels connecting the island to the mainland and a system of canoes serving island tours.

With a strengthening foundation and clear development direction, Phu Quy is expected to achieve strong breakthroughs in the coming years. Strategic planning, diversified tourism products, and a firm commitment to environmental protection will be key to building a sustainable brand and gradually elevating the island’s profile both nationally and internationally.
