Positioning the Da Lat Flower Festival brand

Just as Hue is known for the Hue Festival, Da Nang for its international fireworks festival and Buon Ma Thuot for its Coffee Festival, Da Lat - Lam Dong has made the Flower Festival a signature cultural and tourism brand. With just two months until the 11th edition, the question is how to keep the festival fresh and distinctive enough to stay in visitors' minds, build anticipation and inspire them to return.

A flower festival for seeing flowers

Looking back at the Da Lat Flower Festivals of 15 to 20 years ago, the images of those vibrant celebrations remain vivid. A giant rose model made from tens of thousands of blooms, colorful flower floats, long lines of flower-decorated bicycles and flower vendors filled the streets. Around Xuan Huong Lake, flowers were arranged into artistic installations and miniature landscapes, while dozens of floral records were set, creating a richly colored festival scene. The appeal of the festival, I realized, did not always lie in the scale of the stage or the number of programs, but in the way flowers were displayed and shaped, transforming the city itself into a celebration.

What was equally memorable was the participation of Da Lat residents. Gardeners, flower villages and businesses devoted their creativity to artistic floral displays, while students rehearsed day and night to take part in festival activities. The festival was not simply something for audiences to watch, but a celebration that Da Lat residents helped create, enjoy and share with visitors.

The beauty of flowers never loses its appeal

Over time, large-scale performances, entertainment programs and music stages have drawn increasing attention. These are important highlights, but if they become the festival's dominant feature while floral spaces fall short in scale and creativity, the event risks losing sight of its core identity.

Major concerts and spectacular stage shows can be found in many cities. But to walk along streets overflowing with flowers, pause by Xuan Huong Lake to admire carefully crafted floral installations in the cool highland air, and soak up Da Lat's dreamy, romantic atmosphere, visitors have to come to the city itself.

Positioning the Flower Festival brand

Not long ago, a giant bouquet of fresh flowers placed beside Xuan Huong Lake, in front of the Da Lat Flower Garden, became a major attraction. For nearly a week, tens of thousands of people came to admire it and take photographs. Without the need for extensive promotion, the beauty of flowers alone drew people into the streets.

That shows the Flower Festival needs floral spaces that are large enough, beautiful enough, distinctive enough and artistically compelling enough to become attractions in their own right. These could take the form of flower mazes, flower gates, flower walls, flower streams, flower houses, flower boats, flower castles, flower caves, flower hills or long flower-lined streets stretching through Lam Vien Square and around Xuan Huong Lake. Each space should carry its own concept and distinctive identity, rather than consist merely of clusters of potted flowers arranged as decoration.

Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Deputy Director of the Lam Dong Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said positioning the Da Lat Flower Festival brand should be part of a long-term strategy to develop Da Lat - Lam Dong's cultural and tourism identity. The goal is not simply to deliver a successful festival, but to build a consistent image so that when people think of the Flower Festival, they think of Da Lat, its distinctive floral spaces and memorable experiences in the city of flowers.

Renewing the festival does not mean continuously adding new programs to every edition. Core activities can be maintained, while the way they are presented can be refreshed through new flower varieties, installation art, landscape design, and stories about floriculture and the people of Da Lat. Flowers never lose their beauty. A stable identity, combined with creativity in the visitor experience, is the foundation for strengthening the Flower Festival brand.

The theme of the 11th Da Lat Flower Festival in 2026, “Da Lat - A Harmony of Flowers and Music,” brings together two of the city's strengths: its floral beauty and its status as a UNESCO Creative City of Music. Music can deepen the emotional experience of floral spaces and create a distinctive sense of harmony, but it should not replace flowers at the heart of the festival.

Among the 11 main programs and 25 supporting activities, this year's festival includes several long-standing features such as floral spaces, the vegetable and flower fair, tea, coffee and local specialty streets, and flower and ornamental plant exhibitions. Visitors can immerse themselves in floral displays, browse the fair to admire and buy flowers, enjoy coffee and local cuisine, and view flower and ornamental plant creations shaped by the skill and passion of Da Lat growers.

Rather than repeating fixed displays, these familiar programs can be reimagined with new visual concepts and different artistic floral installations at each edition. It is this combination of creativity, craftsmanship and the vivid beauty of flowers that can keep visitors coming back.

Beauty that spreads on its own

In the digital age, a beautiful floral space can become a more powerful promotional image than any repeated slogan. Visitors take photos, share videos and tell stories about their experiences, allowing those images to continue circulating on social media and bringing Da Lat to people who have never been there.

Nguyen Thi Duc Hanh, a visitor from Ben Luc - Tay Ninh, is a flower lover who often calls to ask when the Flower Festival will take place so she can return to Da Lat. She said: “I love Da Lat for its pleasant climate, romantic scenery and flower gardens. What I look forward to most each Flower Festival is walking through beautiful floral spaces, seeing new arrangements, and enjoying the gentle beauty of flowers combined with materials such as stone, driftwood, bamboo and ceramics. As long as there are more flower-lined streets, floral corners and distinctive installations where people can stroll with their families, many visitors will keep looking forward to the festival.”

The Flower Festival needs more than spectacular programs that can only serve tens of thousands of spectators. It also needs festival spaces that encourage visitors to stay longer. A tourism experience is not only about watching a performance, but also about having a place where visitors can immerse themselves in the festival.

When flowers are not only admired for their beauty but also recognized as an economic asset and a cultural identity closely tied to community life, the Flower Festival can become an emotional destination in itself - one that gives visitors a reason to look forward to every new season.
