Preserving the Pulse of Cham Dance in Modern Life

In the fast-changing rhythm of modern life, Cham dance is more than a form of spiritual expression during festivals. It is the “pulse” of a living heritage, reflecting the historical depth and cultural identity of the Cham community.

Planting the Seeds of Heritage Preservation

Cham dance is more than a series of physical movements. It is an artistic language that conveys the spiritual life, labor and aspirations of the Cham people. Each fan dance, water-carrying dance and scarf dance contains stories of history passed down through generations.

To preserve this heritage, Cham folk culture clubs emerged from the community’s own desire to safeguard its traditions. Recalling the early days of the movement, Bich Thi Mi Net, a former member of a Cham folk culture club, said: “As a member of the Cham community, I have always wondered how to preserve our cultural identity. When I was involved in youth activities, I brought together young people who loved traditional arts and formed a dance troupe. Whenever festivals approached, everyone would set aside their daily concerns and practice together.”

From those initial groups, interest in Cham dance gradually spread, creating a vibrant and cohesive space for community cultural activities.

The strongest foundation for the continuity of Cham dance lies in the younger generation. Beyond traditional stages and tourism events, young people today are actively sharing Cham dances on social media, turning the digital space into a bridge that brings ethnic culture closer to the public.

Binh Thien Ly, an active member of a Cham dance troupe, said: “Besides performing at festivals, I often post photos and videos of Cham dances on my personal social media. When I see tourists and friends from near and far embracing and enjoying these performances, I feel proud and gain more motivation to promote our traditional art.”

That connection is not a passing emotion but the result of long-term cultural nurturing from childhood. Ly Bao Han, a high school student, said: “I joined the Cham dance troupe when I was in primary school. Although practicing can sometimes be demanding, I always try my best because I know that every dance carries a sacred meaning. This is how the younger generation can continue and pass on our ethnic pride.”

Bringing Heritage into Early Childhood Education

Beyond performances, the transmission of heritage is also being systematically integrated into early childhood education. Cham teachers skillfully incorporate dance, singing, legends, customs and traditions into school activities, allowing young children to absorb their cultural heritage naturally.

Cham dances are precious heritage. Through classroom lessons, extracurricular activities and practical experiences, I introduce children to traditional New Year customs, major festivals such as Kate and Rija Ngar, as well as the meaning of ginger cakes and fire dances. Guiding young children is how we preserve the cultural essence from its roots.

Cham dance will never become outdated if it is passed down and valued in the right way. The graceful movements of young women performing fan dances, combined with the powerful steps of Cham men to the lively rhythms of Baranung drums and Saranai horns, have become a distinctive “cultural ambassador.”

The revival and sustained development of Cham dance troupes not only enrich community cultural life but also transform intangible heritage into a distinctive tourism resource. With the dedication of generations, the “pulse” of Cham culture will continue to endure, affirming its vitality within the diverse cultural heritage of Vietnam’s ethnic communities.
