Nestled within Ta Dung National Park in Lam Dong Province, a hidden “wild island” offers travelers a rare escape into pristine nature. With emerald forests, crystal-clear waters, and misty sunrises, this highland gem has earned the nickname “Ha Long Bay of the Central Highlands.”

On a weekend, we joined a group of backpackers riding motorbikes to Ta Dung National Park, about 50 kilometers from Gia Nghia. The closer we got, the fresher the air became, thanks to the lush forests flanking both sides of the road. The winding roads hugged the green hillsides, while wildflowers along the way added splashes of vibrant color. From the higher slopes near Dong Nai 3 Hydropower Reservoir, dozens of small islands dotted the lake’s surface. Gazing down at the scenery, it was easy to see why many call this place the “Ha Long Bay of the Central Highlands”—though with its rugged forests, Ta Dung has a character all its own.

Our group rented two boats and, after about 20 minutes, arrived at one of the islands in the reservoir. Along the way, we saw fishing nets on the shore, adding a rustic touch to the green hills and blue waters. Gentle waves lapped against the island, creating a calm and soothing rhythm.

Once ashore, we started our ‘desert island’ adventure. Some of us cut bamboo to build shelters, others gathered firewood for warmth and cooking, while a few went fishing. The island’s quiet beauty quickly drew us in. Within moments, small bamboo huts stood among the trees. After setting up camp, we jumped into the crystal-clear water, swimming freely as the sun set in bright colors—an unforgettable experience.

When night came, the lake grew lively. Lights flickered in the distance, while the sound of oars hitting the water echoed through the quiet hills. The calm of the forest contrasted with the gentle life unfolding on the lake.

The most magical moment, however, came at dawn. Even as the sun rises, mountain mist still lingers, clinging to the forest canopy. From the island’s peak, it feels as if you could stretch out your hand and gather handfuls of mist. The sunrise left our group in awe, as peace and stillness unfolded before our eyes. Rays of light pierced through lazy clouds, and time seemed to move more slowly.

A sunrise on this ‘desert island’ is calm and timeless, an experience that lingers in memory long after. Its raw beauty and untouched wilderness bring a special kind of joy. For backpackers, that’s all it takes: a brief escape from work and the city’s noise, and a chance to lose themselves in nature.
