In recent weeks, coastal waters across south-central Vietnam—particularly in Lam Dong and Khanh Hoa—have seen a notable rise in sightings of whales and dolphins near shore, drawing growing attention from both residents and tourists.

Within less than a month, multiple coastal locations such as Mui Ne, Phu Quy and Tuy Phong have recorded frequent whale appearances. In some instances, pods numbering dozens—occasionally approaching 100 individuals—were observed swimming and feeding near the surface, sometimes just offshore, creating rare and striking scenes.

Beyond Lam Dong’s coastal stretch, similar activity has been reported in Nha Trang Bay and Cam Ranh, where pods of dolphins have been seen swimming close to land. These encounters have quickly spread across social media platforms, amplifying interest in Vietnam’s marine biodiversity.

Marine scientists note that such occurrences are typically linked to shifts in the distribution of prey species or changes in environmental conditions. However, the frequency and scale of recent sightings point to a more encouraging trend: an improvement in marine ecosystems and a rebound in fish stocks.

The return of large marine species such as whales and dolphins is widely regarded as a biological indicator of healthier ocean conditions, reflecting increased food availability and reduced ecological stress.

Authorities and conservation experts are urging the public to act responsibly when encountering marine wildlife. Recommended practices include maintaining a minimum distance of 100 meters, minimizing noise, and avoiding pursuit or close interaction that could disrupt natural behavior.

Experts emphasize that safeguarding marine ecosystems is essential not only for biodiversity conservation but also for sustaining long-term tourism development. Responsible stewardship of ocean resources will help position Vietnam’s coastal regions as attractive, eco-friendly destinations for both domestic and international visitors.
