Lam Dong accelerates marine economic growth
With strong coastal advantages and long-term strategic planning, Lam Dong is accelerating marine economic development through fisheries, tourism, logistics, and renewable energy projects.
Toward a Regional Fisheries Hub
Phu Quy is gradually transforming into a key center for marine economic development. Located around 100 kilometers offshore, the once-pristine island is increasingly being seen as a “blue pearl” with significant potential and advantages.
Situated more than 100 kilometers southeast of Phan Thiet and about 385 kilometers northwest of the Truong Sa Islands in Khanh Hoa, Phu Quy benefits from favorable conditions for offshore fishing activities.
Over the years, seafood exploitation has remained the island’s key economic sector. The island currently operates a fleet of 1,678 fishing vessels, including 130 boats specializing in seafood purchasing and transport services.
Across the entire special zone, 519 fishing vessels have been equipped with voyage monitoring systems. Seafood catch in Phu Quy reached more than 3,570 tons in the Q1 of 2026, up nearly 730 tons compared with the same period in 2025.
Alongside its strong fisheries sector, Phu Quy is also known as a “jade island,” increasingly attracting visitors thanks to its pristine landscapes and rich cultural and historical heritage. Key attractions drawing both domestic and international tourists include the national historical site Van An Thanh, Princess Ban Tranh Temple, and Linh Quang Pagoda.
Famous attractions such as Bai Nho - Ganh Hang, Trieu Duong Bay, Hon Tranh, the majestic lighthouse, Phu Quy Flagpole and Cao Cat Mountain have left a strong impression on visitors to Phu Quy.
In the first quarter of 2026 alone, Phu Quy welcomed 57,286 visitors, up nearly 1,400 compared to the same period last year, including more than 1,900 international tourists.
Commenting on recent local developments, Le Hong Loi, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People’s Committee of Phu Quy, said the island’s socio-economic conditions have gradually stabilized over recent years.
He noted that the marine economy remains the core sector driving growth. Tourism has expanded strongly, steadily affirming the island’s position as an attractive destination for both domestic and international visitors. Meanwhile, trade, services and transport infrastructure continue to be upgraded and developed.
Looking ahead, Phu Quy Special Zone aims to become a provincial marine economy hub while also developing into a high-quality eco-tourism and resort destination.
To develop the marine economy, Phu Quy special zone must first focus on its two key industries: fisheries and tourism. For the fisheries sector, the island should develop distinctive products and build a strong Phu Quy brand. Local authorities should also attract investment in deep seafood processing, while upgrading port and harbor infrastructure.

With its unique geographic position, Phu Quy is emerging as a fisheries logistics and support services hub for Lam Dong. If developed in line with strategic planning, Phu Quy is expected to attract more visitors in the future thanks to its distinctive and unique tourism products.
Breakthrough driver of the economy
Beyond the “jewel” - Phu Quy, (Lam Dong) boasts a coastline stretching 192 kilometers and around 760 km² of coastal land. The province is also recognized as one of the country’s three key fishing grounds for offshore fishing.
Among its marine economic advantages, maritime transport stands out as a primary growth driver. Port operations and sea transport services are currently being invested in and expanded. Alongside maritime logistics, Lam Dong also holds strong potential in offshore fishing and aquaculture development.
According to Phan Nguyen Hoang Tan, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Lam Dong currently has about 6,964 hectares dedicated to aquaculture. The province’s annual seafood output ranks among the top five nationwide.
The locality has also invested in high-capacity fishing vessels to support offshore fishing operations and developed shrimp hatchery production, accounting for more than 25% of the country’s total output.
Beyond expanding both volume and variety in seafood production, “blue economy” development in Lam Dong is also advancing into mineral extraction industries, large-scale seaport infrastructure, logistics, and renewable energy. In addition, marine tourism and related services are growing strongly, helping the province become increasingly attractive to both domestic and international visitors.
Lam Dong has a 192-kilometer coastline featuring numerous bays, beaches, and marine conservation areas, including Phu Quy Island, Cu Lao Cau, and the Mui Ne - Hon Rom and Ham Tien coastal areas. Among them, Mui Ne - Phan Thiet is widely recognized as the country’s “resort capital.”
Tourist arrivals to Lam Dong have grown by nearly 11% annually, while tourism revenue has increased by 24.78% per year, creating more employment opportunities for local workers. The expansion of tourism has also boosted demand for agricultural, forestry, and fisheries products, along with related industries.
All of these marine potential advantages and values continue to affirm the important role of the sea in socio-economic development, improving people’s livelihoods, and ensuring national defense and security in Lam Dong.
Accordingly, the province has identified “fisheries exploitation - aquaculture - seafood processing” and “renewable energy” as two of its six priority marine economic sectors.
In the fisheries sector, Lam Dong is focusing on sustainable development, closely linked with efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Lam Dong is actively restructuring its fishing sector in line with resource availability, gradually reducing nearshore fishing fleets, and strictly eliminating non-compliant vessels and prohibited fishing practices. The province is also set to implement a marine aquaculture development plan through 2030, with a vision to 2045, focusing on industrial-scale farming, science and technology applications, and digital transformation.
Local authorities are mobilizing and integrating resources to develop synchronized infrastructure for fisheries exploitation and logistics services, gradually positioning Phu Quy special zone as a regional fisheries hub. Efforts to protect marine resources and the environment will continue to be carried out consistently and strictly.
In renewable energy, Lam Dong is prioritizing offshore wind power, solar energy, and emerging sources such as hydrogen and green ammonia. These sectors are expected to become key long-term drivers of marine and overall economic growth.
The province is also focusing on improving the investment environment and removing barriers for businesses, while developing supporting industries for energy to increase localization rates and move toward a more self-reliant and sustainable energy sector.
To develop its marine economy, Lam Dong is accelerating a series of key driver projects in its eastern coastal area. These include coastal road development, tourism and urban projects, as well as plans for a future coastal economic zone, all of which are being urgently advanced.
With its strong natural advantages and long-term strategic vision, the province is increasingly expected to build a more dynamic and resilient marine economy, creating momentum for broader growth and expansion in the coming period.
