Hon Rua, a small and picturesque rocky islet off the coast of Hoa Thang Commune, is now entering its annual low-tide season, widely considered the best time of year to visit. During this brief period, visitors can walk across the exposed seabed to reach the islet on foot.

Known locally by generations of fishermen as Hon Nghe, the rocky islet lies just 120 meters from the shore. Covering approximately 800 square meters and rising about 15 meters above sea level, it is blanketed with grass, shrubs, and green moss. From a distance, the islet resembles a turtle facing the open sea, greeting the rolling waves.

For most of the year, Hon Rua sits quietly offshore, surrounded by gentle waves. However, in July, when the tides reach their lowest point, the sea occasionally recedes far enough to expose the entire rocky outcrop and create a natural pathway connecting it to the mainland.

Photographer Lu Duy Tuong, who recently visited the area during low tide, said the retreating sea reveals wide stretches of sand and a natural walking route leading to Hon Rua. Local residents take advantage of the exposed seabed to collect shellfish and mussels, while visitors seize the rare opportunity to photograph one of the coast's most distinctive landscapes.

Hon Rua lies beside Hong Chinh Fishing Village, a small coastal community of only a few dozen households. Unlike deep-sea fishermen, local residents use traditional basket boats to fish and squid-jig close to shore.

According to local fishermen, the waters surrounding Hon Rua are rich in shrimp, fish, squid, and other seafood. During the southwest monsoon season, the area is also known for moi (tiny krill), a local delicacy that can be eaten fresh, fermented into fish sauce, or dried.

For generations, the islet has been closely connected to the lives of the fishing community. During high tide, it provides a natural shelter for small boats. During low tide, it becomes a unique attraction for both locals and visitors. Despite its beauty, Hon Rua remains largely untouched, with crystal-clear waters and an unspoiled natural environment.

"Low tide offers a rare opportunity to walk to Hon Rua, admire the scenery, and enjoy the long sandy beach," said photographer Lu Duy Tuong. "It happens only a few days each year, making it a special experience for anyone who loves the sea."

He also noted that Hon Rua is located close to famous attractions such as Bau Trang and the Mui Ne Sand Dunes, making it an ideal stop for travelers exploring the region.

Hon Rua remains a peaceful coastal gem, quietly waiting to welcome visitors who wish to discover its timeless beauty, swim in its clear waters, and experience the tranquil charm of Hoa Thang's seaside landscape.
