Lam Dong tops the medal table at 2026 National Youth Kurash Championships

With 39 medals, 14 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze, the Lam Dong youth Kurash team won first place overall and first place in the youth category at the 2026 National Youth Kurash Championships, which concluded on August 27 after nearly a week of competition in Da Lat.

Lam Dong surges ahead in a close race

The tournament was organized by the Vietnam Sports Authority in coordination with the National Sports Training Center and took place from August 22 to 27 at the National Sports Training Center’s Da Lat facility.

A total of 14 teams competed, including the Army, Can Tho, Dong Thap, Thanh Hoa, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Vinh Long, Bac Ninh, An Giang, the Ministry of Public Security, Hai Phong, Ca Mau and Lam Dong. Nearly 500 athletes competed in combat events for 71 sets of medals across four age groups: 8 - 11, 12 - 13, 14 - 15 and 16 - 18.

The annual tournament is held for young athletes to assess training programs in localities and organizations nationwide, while identifying and selecting promising talents to build a pipeline for Vietnam’s Kurash national team at domestic and international competitions in the future.

Lam Dong entered the tournament with 47 athletes and four coaches. The team faced strong competition from the Army delegation and surged ahead in the final stages to claim first place overall.

The Army team also won 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 11 silver and 15 bronze, the same total number of medals as Lam Dong. However, with one fewer gold medal, the Army finished second overall. Can Tho ranked third with 37 medals, including 11 gold, eight silver and 18 bronze.

Young athletes deliver standout performances

Several Lam Dong athletes delivered outstanding performances. Huynh Tran My Uyen, born in 2012, won two gold medals in the 40-kg weight class, competing in both the 14 - 15 and 16 - 18 age groups. Nguyen Huynh Minh Phat, born in 2009, won gold in the 71-kg weight class in the 16 - 18 age group, while Ngo Minh Thanh, also born in 2009, won gold in the 50-kg weight class in the same age group.

The Lam Dong Kurash program currently has 47 athletes, including six national-team athletes, seven youth-team athletes, 23 athletes in the talent development program and 11 athletes from the expanded grassroots program. The team is training at the Lam Dong Sports Training and Competition Center’s Phan Thiet facility under head coach Nguyen Ngoc Phong.
