Da Lat’s First Flower Festival: A Cultural Tourism Brand
Held from December 10 to 18, 2005, the first Da Lat Flower Festival laid the foundation for a distinctive cultural tourism brand, connecting flowers, landscapes, art, people and local identity.

When the City of a Thousand Flowers Celebrated
Before 2005, Da Lat was already known for its mild climate, poetic landscapes and distinctive flower gardens. However, organizing a large-scale Flower Festival elevated these existing assets beyond scenic attractions, transforming them into a cultural and tourism event with broad appeal and helping promote the destination to residents and visitors alike.
Held over nine days, from December 10 to 18, 2005, the first Da Lat Flower Festival carried the theme “Da Lat – A Rendezvous of Flowers in All Their Colors.” Following the success of the Da Lat Flower Colors Festival in 2004, the event marked a transition from separate festival activities to a more comprehensive program with a clear theme, scale and development direction.
The highlight of the inaugural festival was its opening ceremony on a floating stage on Xuan Huong Lake. The main stage was designed in the shape of a blooming flower, accompanied by four smaller stages on the lake. The combination of lighting, music, water and flowers created a performance space closely connected to Da Lat’s distinctive landscape.
Nearly 1,000 performers took part in a staged production recreating stories and legends about love and flowers. The opening night also featured a flower-decorated vehicle parade and fireworks, attracting large audiences.
From its organization to its artistic content, the festival demonstrated a new approach: placing flowers at the center of an event that connected landscape, culture and tourism.
Through this approach, Da Lat’s beauty was presented not only through flower gardens and scenic attractions, but also through a festival that engaged the community and reflected the destination’s local identity.

Bringing Flowers from Gardens to Streets
One of the most distinctive features of the first Da Lat Flower Festival was its effort to take flowers beyond gardens and exhibition spaces, bringing them directly onto the streets, across the lake and into the city’s cultural activities.
More than 160 flower-decorated vehicles paraded along city streets, turning the urban landscape into part of the celebration. On Xuan Huong Lake, flower boats expanded the viewing experience, blending floral displays with the scenery of the water.
Exhibitions showcased flowers from Da Lat, local craft villages and production facilities across Lam Dong, alongside flowers from other regions. Spaces such as Da Lat Flower Street, themed “The Breath of the Four Seasons,” and the “Magical Central Highlands” art park broadened the experience for residents and visitors, bringing flowers into a variety of cultural and communal settings.
Alongside exhibitions and parades, the festival featured a wine celebration, programs centered on love, a rose festival night, artistic performances and music shows. The Lang Biang Mountain climbing competition, paragliding performances, and tours exploring local culture, architecture and ecology further enriched the tourism offerings during the event.
This diversity demonstrated that the Flower Festival was about more than presenting the beauty of different flowers. By combining art, culture, experiences and tourism, flowers became a thread connecting the locality’s many values, while creating more opportunities for residents, artisans and flower producers to participate in promoting their homeland.
More importantly, bringing flowers from gardens to streets helped transform a natural advantage into a shared cultural experience. Flowers became more than agricultural products or decorative elements in the landscape; they evolved into symbols associated with Da Lat’s way of life, identity and appeal.
A Milestone That Paved the Way for a Lasting Brand
The first Da Lat Flower Festival mattered not only during the days of celebration but also because it established a direction for developing a cultural and tourism event that could be held regularly and gradually build a distinctive identity.
Following the inaugural festival, the event was envisioned as a biennial celebration. This provided a foundation for Da Lat to refine its organization, expand its activities and strengthen its identity with each subsequent edition.
In practice, the value of a festival lies not only in the scale of its program or its ability to attract visitors while it is taking place, but also in its capacity to sustain momentum, establish a distinctive identity and contribute to long-term local development. In Da Lat, combining flowers with the landscape, artistic expression, local culture and community participation created a foundation for the event to become increasingly distinctive over time.

From the floating stage on Xuan Huong Lake and colorful flower-decorated vehicle parades to a diverse series of cultural, artistic and tourism activities, the first Da Lat Flower Festival helped bring the image of the City of a Thousand Flowers closer to the public through tangible and vivid experiences.
Looking back at the milestone of 2005, the greatest significance of the inaugural festival was not simply that it delivered a successful celebration of flowers. It marked the beginning of a process to build an event brand rooted in local identity.
From that first festival, Da Lat gained a stronger foundation for developing a regular cultural and tourism event with its own character, one that would become more distinctive with each edition—a celebration where flowers do more than beautify the landscape: they tell the story of Da Lat’s people, culture and vitality.
