A Date with Da Lat – A Date with the Wild Sunflower Season

Some dates need no reminders; when the season returns, so does the longing. For me, it is a date with the golden wild sunflowers of the Lam Vien Plateau. As the late-autumn rains begin to ease, I find myself longing to set off on my motorbike from the sun-drenched, windswept coast in search of patches of flowers along the roadside. It is not about discovering a new destination, but rather revisiting golden hillsides, familiar roads and a sense of peace that has become a cherished memory.

Head Up the Pass in Search of Gold

Though I have been to Da Lat many times, my heart still flutters whenever the wild sunflower season returns. In late October, when images of golden hillsides begin circulating on social media, the yearning for the highlands compels me to return.

For a day trip from the coastal area of Phan Thiet, I usually choose to ride a motorcycle up to the plateau. Riding a bike holds a unique charm, allowing me to vividly feel the shifting landscape and changing weather along the way. Endless rolling mountains, clouds lingering halfway up the passes, and deep green forests have time and again prompted me to slow down and simply take it all in.

When the wild sunflower season arrives, many others also choose to roam the roads leading to Da Lat by motorcycle. Some ride with friends, while others travel alone with a camera. They seek out the highlands not necessarily for famous tourist spots, but sometimes just to gaze at the golden hillsides and immerse themselves in nature.

Wild sunflowers do not always bloom right on schedule. Some years, the golden flowers stretch along the roads by late October; other years, the blossoms only burst into true radiance in November. This variation infuses every trip with a touch of anticipation, and sometimes just catching a single patch of yellow flowers by the roadside is enough to make the journey unforgettable.

Cherishing the Golden Roads

Wild sunflowers grow naturally along roadsides, on hillsides, beside fences, or nestled among coffee plantations. Following the rainy season, when the sun returns, the bushes burst into bloom, dyeing strips of land golden. I love the wild sunflower for its rustic beauty. Requiring no fussy care, the flower still thrives vigorously in the sun and wind, warming up the highland scenery.

Along the routes from Duc Trong up to Da Lat, wild sunflowers appear in patches—sometimes just a few scattered bushes, other times glowing bright yellow across an entire slope. For me, the Cam Ly – Van Thanh – Ta Nung route leaves the deepest impression, thanks to the harmonious blend of wild yellow blossoms, coffee farms, and mountainous landscapes.

Stopping in front of a hillside blazing with wild sunflowers, Nguyen Thao Nguyen, a young teacher, could not hide her delight at the natural scenery. According to her, the warm golden hue of the wildflowers against the deep green of the pine forest creates a scene that is both vibrant and serene. "The most memorable part of the trip is not just taking beautiful photos, but the feeling of relaxation—being able to step away from the daily routine and immerse myself in the highland scenery. I feel recharged," Nguyen shared.

Along those routes, it is not difficult to cross paths with people who share the same passion. They arrive by motorcycle, carrying cameras or simply wanting to gaze at the flowers. Some stand quietly by the hillside, while others are engrossed in finding a great angle for a photo. Chance encounters, sometimes just a brief greeting or a few words about the flower season, make the journey even more interesting.

For international tourists, the golden wild sunflowers are sometimes an unexpected discovery. Maksim, a foreign traveler living in Mui Ne, happened upon the brilliant patches of yellow flowers during his trip. "I didn't know it was the season for these flowers. When I saw a long strip of brilliant yellow blossoms by the roadside, I stopped my bike to take it in. I am very impressed by the ever-changing natural landscape along the journey, which brings a truly special feeling," Maksim shared.

According to Maksim, the trip from Mui Ne to Lang Biang was also an opportunity to test his skills on mountain roads, in preparation for a trip with a group of friends to explore the mountainous regions of northern Viet Nam at the end of the year.

Maksim’s impressions made me appreciate the appeal of these flower-lined routes even more. Wild sunflowers are at their most beautiful not only when they bloom into vast carpets of flowers, but sometimes when they suddenly appear around a bend, beneath a blue sky and among silent pine trees.

A Short Season, a Lasting Longing

The wild sunflower season does not last long. The patches of flowers usually bloom brilliantly for a few weeks and then gradually fade as the weather changes with the seasons. Therefore, not every trip brings me the golden hillsides I hope for. Some years, when I arrive early, only a few flowers have bloomed; at other times, I only manage to spot small clumps of flowers by the roadside.

Yet what makes me love these trips lies not just in the flower season. It is also the gentle morning chill, the winding roads through the pine forests, a small café on a sloping hillside, or the moment of standing in the highlands, watching the afternoon sun slowly sink.

This year, the wild sunflower season arrives as Da Lat looks forward to the 11th Flower Festival in 2026. Amid meticulously tended flower gardens, exhibition spaces, and activities honoring flower cultivation, the wild sunflower retains a beauty all its own. Requiring no elaborate arrangement or meticulous care, the wildflower simply blooms naturally, adorning the hillsides and outlying roads with splashes of gold, contributing to the allure of nature-focused trips in Da Lat toward the end of the year. These flower-lined routes guide visitors through agricultural production areas, craft villages, and outlying residential areas, offering opportunities to experience a more intimate and peaceful side of Da Lat.

Perhaps everyone who loves the Da Lat highlands holds a special season in their heart. Some remember the season of purple jacarandas, others wait for cherry blossoms, while some cherish the days when mist shrouds the lake. For me, the most memorable season is still the wild sunflower season, when the hillsides dress themselves in brilliant gold.

Along the winding roads and amid the endless green of the pine forests, that golden hue always has a way of making people stop, gaze, and hold onto a little affection and longing of their own.

Until next time, Da Lat—until the next season of golden flowers. Until a longing that never grows old.
