Each spring, as Tet festivities fill the air, the golden sand dunes of Mui Ne transform into a distinctive sporting arena, drawing athletes and visitors alike to one of the region’s most iconic landscapes.

Held on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year (February 20), the 2026 Sand Dunes Running Challenge took place at the famed Mui Ne Flying Sand Dunes under the theme “Celebrating the Party – Celebrating Spring.” More than just a race, the event remains a vivid example of how sport, culture and tourism intersect in this coastal destination.

Nearly 250 athletes joined the challenge, including 75 women, representing communes, wards, schools, neighborhood clusters, tourism enterprises and local organizations. Notably, two international runners from the United Kingdom and South Korea participated, adding a cross-cultural dimension to the event.

The competition featured two distances: 2,500 meters for women and 4,000 meters for men. While the opening 500 meters were run on flat terrain, the remaining distance required competitors to navigate steep, shifting sand dunes — testing endurance, balance and resilience under the coastal sun.

Running on sand demands far greater stamina than conventional road racing. Each stride sinks slightly, requiring extra force and concentration. Against a backdrop of wind-swept hills and expansive blue skies, the race offered both a physical challenge and a striking visual spectacle.

In the women’s 2,500-meter race, Nguyen Thi Thanh Tuyen of Tan Thanh secured first place, while Do Duy Thang, also representing Tan Thanh, claimed the top spot in the men’s 4,000-meter category.

Sport as a Cultural and Tourism Asset

Over the years, the Mui Ne Sand Dunes Run has evolved into more than a sporting competition. It has become a distinctive tourism product — a symbolic “racecourse” where athleticism meets landscape.
