Thanks to advantageous climate and soil conditions and farmers' proactive changes in crop cultivation, durian is emerging as an important crop in the communes of Dam Rong, providing stable incomes and contributing to rural economic development.

Enhancing the value of the “Dam Rong Durian” brand
In recent years, the area dedicated to durian cultivation in the Dam Rong communes has steadily increased. Currently, there are over 3,000 hectares of durian, with almost 1,400 hectares actively producing and yielding more than 30,000 tonnes each year.
Durian has emerged as a crucial crop for the region, playing a significant role in the growth of the local agricultural economy.

In terms of agricultural production, Dam Rong 2 Commune has witnessed the most significant growth, with nearly 1,500 hectares under durian cultivation, including over 700 hectares in production and annual output of about 15,000 tonnes. The flourishing durian orchards spanning the hillsides are transforming the landscape of a region that previously faced significant agricultural challenges.
In Lieng Hung Village, Ngo Duc Thang’s family manages more than seven hectares of durian, with over three hectares now entering stable commercial production. Currently, he and his family are concentrating on caring for the trees during the fruit-development stage in preparation for the upcoming harvest.

According to Thang, this year's yield is projected to surpass 60 tonnes. The financial gains from durian farming have allowed his family to boost their production and elevate their quality of life.
“Durian has provided substantial economic returns over the last few years. However, the market's expectations for quality and food safety are becoming increasingly stringent. As a result, we meticulously adhere to the production protocols recommended by technical experts, utilize agricultural inputs that comply with regulations, and keep thorough production records to fulfill traceability standards,” Thang stated.
“
To meet export requirements, we always comply with production procedures guided by technical agencies, use agricultural inputs properly, and keep detailed production records to ensure traceability.

Nguyen Van Tong from Bang Lang Village is also reaping the benefits of durian farming, as he cultivates this fruit on 1.5 hectares of land. He states that durian is the most lucrative crop among his family's perennial plants.
“I hope local authorities will continue to create additional planting area codes and enhance management efforts so that farmers can have their products qualify for official export markets. Additionally, I believe that technical agencies should offer more training programs to assist farmers in improving product quality and enable them to invest with confidence for the long term,” Tong expressed.

A significant milestone for the local durian industry came on March 31, 2025, when the “Dam Rong Durian” trademark was officially granted a certificate of protection by the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam. This serves as an important foundation for increasing product value, expanding market access, and building the image of Lam Dong’s distinctive durian-growing region.
Towards sustainable durian production
In addition to expanding areas, local authorities are putting various strategies in place to enhance product quality and support sustainable development of durian cultivation.
In recent years, the agricultural sector has frequently conducted training sessions and technology transfer initiatives for farmers; provided guidance on production practices that meet VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards; and created high-tech farming models that incorporate water-efficient irrigation systems and eco-friendly biological products.

Technical field trips and knowledge-sharing events at thriving orchards are also organized, enabling farmers to access innovative cultivation techniques, enhance their understanding of safe production practices, and comply with export market standards.
Truong Van Sang, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Dam Rong 2 Commune, stated that durian has emerged as a vital crop, playing a major role in agricultural development and enhancing the livelihoods of locals.
“
Along with expanding cultivation areas, the locality places special emphasis on product quality and the development of planting area codes to support the sustainable export of durian

According to Truong Van Sang, although the cultivation area is expanding, the commune remains particularly dedicated to enhancing product quality and developing its brand identity.
“We do not encourage durian cultivation to expand merely in response to market trends. Instead, we focus on sustainable development tied to production zoning, strict management of planting area codes, traceability, and compliance with export market requirements. Our goal is to increase added value rather than simply expand output,” Truong Van Sang said.
He also mentioned that in the upcoming years, the commune will continue to collaborate with technical agencies to bolster agricultural extension services, organize training initiatives, guide farmers in implementing VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, and enhance partnerships with businesses to create sustainable value chains from production to consumption.
Dam Rong durian has significant opportunities to enhance the value of local agricultural products
“The safeguarding of the ‘Dam Rong Durian’ trademark presents a significant opportunity to enhance the value of local products. However, to uphold the brand’s integrity, farmers must adhere strictly to safe production methods, ensure consistent product quality, and collaborate with local authorities to foster consumer trust in the market,” Truong Van Sang stressed.
With its numerous natural advantages, Dam Rong durian is well positioned for robust future growth. Capitalizing on its brand, establishing planting area codes, reinforcing production connections, and aiming for official export markets will create a strong foundation for the sustainable development of this industry and increased incomes for local residents.
