Developing the coffee industry in a sustainable direction

At present, coffee is one of Lam Dong’s key crops, covering approximately 327,000 hectares, accounting for 45.02% of the country’s total coffee-growing area. Coffee output in 2025 is estimated to reach over 1 million tonnes, equivalent to 45.49% of national production.

In recent years, alongside affirming product quality, reputation and a distinctive identity, Lam Dong has focused on promoting sustainable production–processing–consumption linkages, laying a solid foundation for the development of its local coffee brand.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province currently has six recognized high-tech coffee production zones, covering a total area of 2,268.48 hectares and involving 1,404 farming households. Advanced technologies such as water-saving irrigation systems, smart fertilization and internet-connected automatic weather monitoring systems are being widely applied, helping optimize resources, reduce production costs, and improve productivity and product quality.

Lam Dong’s coffee production is gradually shifting from a focus on volume to an emphasis on value and quality. The province’s coffee products have entered major markets such as Switzerland, Italy, Japan and Germany, now accounting for around 60% of Lam Dong’s total agricultural value. Nearly 119,000 hectares of coffee plantations in the province have achieved international sustainability certifications, including VietGAP, 4C, UTZ, Rainforest and organic standards.

Nguyen Van Chuong, Director of the Lam Dong Agricultural Extension Center, noted that “ Many coffee-growing areas in the province have adopted domestic and international standards in a synchronized manner. This provides an important foundation for Lam Dong coffee to meet the increasingly stringent requirements of export markets.”

Alongside production development, Lam Dong places strong emphasis on building and protecting its coffee brand. The province currently has 21 certified coffee trademarks and 33 licensed planting area codes, helping protect the interests of businesses and farmers while ensuring product traceability and transparency.

Enhancing added value

According to Nguyen Hoang Phuc, Deputy Director of the Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Environment, based on practical experience, the agricultural sector has identified its key objective in the coming period as developing the coffee industry in a sustainable and modern direction, enhancing added value, meeting international integration demands and effectively adapting to climate change.

Accordingly, the sector will review and restructure coffee production areas toward greater concentration, ensuring stable raw material supplies for processing and deep processing. At the same time, it will focus on building and effectively implementing sustainable coffee production and consumption linkages, strengthening connections among farmers, cooperatives and enterprises.

A comprehensive coffee industry development plan for the 2026–2030 period will be developed in alignment with technical farming processes, replanting plans, renovation and varietal conversion, tailored to the ecological conditions of each sub-region.

The provincial agricultural sector will also continue to prioritize improving the quality of coffee products for export; promoting production in line with international standards and certifications; establishing planting area codes and traceability systems; and accelerating the application of digital transformation in production. These efforts aim to gradually develop smart agriculture, organic farming and environmentally friendly practices.

At the same time, Lam Dong will develop mechanisms and policies to support the coffee industry, effectively leverage the geographical indication ‘Lam Dong Coffee,’ and link it with the brand ‘Da Lat – A Miraculous Crystallization from Fertile Land,’ in order to enhance the value and image of coffee in both domestic and international markets.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment also encourages organizations and enterprises to strengthen sustainable linkages with farmers and cooperatives; supply certified seedlings and inputs; and implement offtake agreements for certified products. Investment in deep-processing technology, specialty-coffee development, and comprehensive data and traceability systems is considered essential to meet EUDR requirements and support long-term export growth.
