When Traditional Methods Become a Bottleneck

Previously, an agricultural processing company in western Lam Dong managed orders, raw materials, and inventory using paper records. As production expanded, limitations became increasingly apparent, including fragmented information, longer processing times, and rising operational costs.

This situation reflects the reality facing many small businesses today. Pressure comes not only from market fluctuations but also from growing demands for product traceability, quality assurance, and faster delivery times.

While many large enterprises have adopted digital data systems and automated processes, numerous small businesses continue to rely on traditional operating methods. This gap is directly affecting their competitiveness.

According to Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huong, owner of an agricultural processing business in western Lam Dong, customers and business partners are paying greater attention to product traceability and professional production management.

Technology adoption helps businesses improve production efficiency.

“Previously, many tasks were carried out manually, making it time-consuming to track orders and raw materials. Since we implemented management software, data can be updated more quickly, operations are better controlled, and errors have been significantly reduced,” Huong said.

She added that the biggest challenge for small businesses is not a lack of awareness but rather investment resources and selecting suitable technological solutions. Therefore, support programs focusing on consulting, training, and technology adoption are highly practical and valuable.

Creating Momentum for Innovation

To help small and medium-sized enterprises adapt to new trends, the Lam Dong Department of Science and Technology's SME Support Program for 2026 focuses on digital transformation, digital platform adoption, technological innovation, intellectual property, and brand development.

Under the program, small businesses can receive support covering up to 50% of digital transformation consulting costs, with assistance capped at VND 50 million per year. Medium-sized enterprises may receive up to VND 100 million annually. Support for purchasing or leasing digital platforms ranges from VND 20 million to VND 100 million, depending on business size.

Importantly, these support policies are designed not only to provide financial assistance but also to encourage businesses to transform their management and operational approaches. By utilizing data-driven management, expanding online sales channels, and investing in brand development, companies can significantly improve their competitive advantages.

According to Nguyen Van Quy, owner of a cocoa production business in Thuan An Commune, technology is creating more equal opportunities for businesses of all sizes.

“If digital platforms are utilized effectively, small businesses can reach customers across different regions, build their own brands, and participate more deeply in supply chains,” Quy said.

Experts believe that amid ongoing economic uncertainty, small businesses remain the most vulnerable sector but also the most adaptable. As technology gradually narrows the gap in scale, competitive advantages will no longer depend solely on capital or labor resources but increasingly on innovation and adaptability.

This creates opportunities for small businesses in Lam Dong to integrate more deeply into value chains and expand their growth potential within the digital economy.

By 2030, Lam Dong aims for 100% of businesses to adopt digital technologies in their operations, with all transactions and contracts conducted electronically. The province also targets 50–70% of small and medium-sized enterprises using digital platforms for management, production, and business activities, while the digital economy is expected to contribute approximately 30% of provincial GRDP.
