Bau Trang (Hong Lam Hamlet, Hoa Thang Commune) is one of Lam Dong’s most striking coastal landscapes, shaped by nature over thousands of years. With vast white sand dunes lying beside expansive freshwater lakes, the destination offers a scene that is both breathtaking and mysterious.

A unique natural masterpiece

Bau Trang consists of two large freshwater lakes separated by a natural strip of sand, forming two sections known as Tieu Ho and Dai Ho. Tieu Ho is called Bau Ong, while Dai Ho is called Bau Ba. In local language, “ho” (lake) is commonly referred to as “bau,” which is why people have long used the names Bau Ong and Bau Ba.

More than 200 years ago, Nguyen Dynasty historians recorded Bau Trang in several geographical works, including Hoang Viet Nhat Thong Dia Du Chi (1806), Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi (1882), and Dong Khanh Dia Du Chi (1887). In Dong Khanh Chi, the site was described as one of the most scenic landscapes of the province. Patriotic poet Nguyen Thong (1827–1884) also praised it as “the most renowned lake among those from the South to this region.”

Bau Trang is surrounded by vast stretches of sand dunes that extend endlessly, interspersed with patches of low forest vegetation, giving it the appearance of a “mini desert.” Beyond its natural beauty, Bau Trang has long served as a vital source of freshwater for local communities, supporting daily life and agricultural production.

During summer, pink lotus flowers bloom across the lakes, adding vibrant colors to the calm blue waters. From the top of the dunes, the lake surface resembles a mirror reflecting the sky, while the soft hues of lotus blossoms lend the landscape a poetic, refreshing charm that helps ease the intense heat.

The sand dunes of Bau Trang, formed over thousands of years, continuously shift in shape due to the wind. Their flowing forms rise and fall in countless patterns, changing hour by hour. In some places, the sand forms ripples like ocean waves, while elsewhere it rises into hill-like or mountain-like shapes.

The fascination of Bau Trang also lies in its diverse natural colors—white, yellow, red, and black sand—creating ever-changing “sand paintings.” The sand sparkles under sunlight and transforms in tone when it rains, adding to the site’s unique charm.

Photographers often note that Bau Trang captivates visitors with its untouched, original beauty. At different times of the day, the landscape reveals entirely different moods, as shifting light and wind continually transform the appearance of the dunes, making each moment unique.

On sunny days, the first rays of light at Bau Trang appear soft, fresh, and pure. By midday, the heat becomes intense and dazzling, carried by dry winds. The air blends the scents of lotus, grass, sand, and the salty sea breeze, creating a simple yet distinctive fragrance of the region.

One destination, many values

From a once little-known wild area, Bau Trang has gradually established its position on Vietnam’s tourism map. It was listed among the Top 100 Impressive Destinations in Vietnam in 2013, named a Favorite ASEAN Destination in 2014, and ranked among the Top 100 Favorite Tourist Destinations in Southern Vietnam in 2016.

In 2019, the scenic complex of Bau Trang was recognized as a national heritage site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. It is also part of the Mui Ne National Tourist Area approved by the Prime Minister.

The entire protected area of Bau Trang covers 371.88 hectares. With its inherent potential and proper development orientation, it is expected to continue serving as a strong “magnet” for visitors.

Today, thanks to improved transport infrastructure, Bau Trang consistently attracts large numbers of tourists and has become an essential stop on any journey to Mui Ne. Visitors can enjoy activities such as sand sliding, ostrich riding, photography, and especially off-road driving across the dunes.

Tran Thi Thuong, a visitor from Ho Chi Minh City, shared: “Every moment here is different. When the wind changes, the scenery changes. That constant transformation keeps me coming back without ever getting bored.”

Recently, many film directors and production crews have chosen Bau Trang as a key filming location, resulting in works that have achieved both artistic and commercial success. This has helped promote the region’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and local people to domestic and international audiences, while opening up new directions for local tourism development.
