Dak Snao 2 Hamlet is home to more than 300 households, most of them are Mong people who migrated from northern provinces. Although they have lived in the area for nearly two decades, many still long for the traditional markets of their hometowns, which were closely tied to their childhood memories, customs and cultural life.

Hoang Ngoc Tuan, head of Dak Snao 2 Hamlet, said: “About five years ago, respected members of the Mong community proposed establishing a traditional market as a place for people to meet, socialize, and ease their homesickness. Since then, the market has gradually taken shape and become a regular community activity.”

Every Saturday morning, locals bring products they have grown, made or crafted themselves to the market. Some carry vegetables and produce from their fields, while others sell traditional cakes, brocade clothing, household items, and specialties reminiscent of their northern hometowns.

For many residents, the market is more than a place to trade goods. It is also an opportunity to reconnect and catch up after a busy week. Hang A Hanh said: “In the past, traditional Mong cakes were usually made only during Tet or special occasions, so they were not always available. Since the market was established, many of these cakes have been sold regularly, allowing people to enjoy them whenever they like.”

In Dak Snao 2, a community that still faces many challenges, the market has become an important social bond. Mong, Dao, Tay, Nung and Kinh residents gather in a welcoming and inclusive space, helping strengthen solidarity among different ethnic groups.

Preserving cultural identity in a changing world

Amid the lively atmosphere of the market, the colorful brocade outfits worn by Mong women stand out as a defining feature. Many choose to wear their finest traditional attire when visiting the market, expressing pride in their cultural heritage.

To make the market more vibrant, local women have formed a cultural performance group that performs on weekends. Traditional dances, the distinctive sound of the Mong flute and familiar folk songs have become a unique attraction, adding to the market's cultural appeal.

For locals, wearing traditional clothing, playing the Mong flute, singing folk songs, and preparing traditional dishes are more than cultural showcases. It is also a way of passing down cherished traditions to younger generations. As long as the sound of the flute echoes through the market and brocade remains part of daily life, the community's cultural identity will continue to thrive.

Though still modest in scale, Dak Snao 2 market is creating new economic opportunities for local people. In addition to villagers, traders from northern provinces have come to sell traditional products such as embroidered scarves, silver jewelry, traditional cakes, and other items associated with highland culture.

Giang A Ly, a respected member of Dak Snao 2 Hamlet, said: “I encourage residents to wear traditional clothing, prepare ethnic dishes, and sell local specialties so that we can both improve livelihoods and preserve our cultural identity. In doing so, we strengthen community solidarity, maintain public order, and help the market continue to grow.”

From its simple stalls and traditional dances to the melodies of Mong musical instruments and the warm smiles of local residents, Dak Snao 2 market is gradually becoming a cultural highlight of the area. More than a place for trade, the market serves as a space where memories are preserved, traditions are celebrated, and community bonds are strengthened.
