Traditional Sports Shine at the Sports Festival
The first Commune Sports Festival in 2026 is not only a celebration of physical fitness, but also a vibrant cultural gathering as many traditional sports of ethnic communities are included in competition events. The activities help enrich spiritual life, strengthen solidarity and preserve local cultural traditions.

A Vibrant Sports Festival
At the Phan Son Commune Sports Festival, traditional sporting events attracted a large crowd to the competition area at the commune cultural house from early morning. Athletes dressed in traditional attire entered the contests with confidence, greeted by the enthusiastic cheers of spectators.
The stick-pushing competition featured thrilling matches that captivated the audience. For ethnic minority groups, stick-pushing represents more than just a competitive sport; it embodies strength, endurance, and resilience. In the crossbow shooting event, athletes fired arrows with speed and accuracy, demonstrating remarkable focus and precision.
Historically, the skills of crossbow shooting have been deeply linked to the everyday lives and work of ethnic communities in the mountainous regions.
Le Ngoc Mai, head of Bon Thop Village, expressed his happiness that young people nowadays have access to various modern entertainment options. He was pleased to observe that local residents and the younger generation are dedicating time from their hectic farming routines to engage in competitions and support the athletes, indicating that traditional culture continues to thrive.
The organizing committee of the Phan Son Commune Sports Festival noted that the event fostered a thrilling competitive atmosphere among the various villages in the commune. Its achievement was gauged not only by the number of medals earned but also by the camaraderie and joint efforts to uphold local cultural practices.
Activities like stick-pushing, tug of war, crossbow shooting, sack racing, and cross-country running across the mountainous landscape of Phan Son drew enthusiastic participation from people of all ages.
The festival also provided local authorities with a chance to assess the effectiveness of grassroots sports initiatives and the potential to further develop community fitness programs.
Preserving Traditions Through Community Games
In the mountainous regions of southeastern Lam Dong Province, various areas have recently begun to integrate traditional ethnic sports into sports festivals, competitions, and cultural events. This approach is viewed as an effective method for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage within the communities.
In La Da Commune, the preservation and practice of folk games have long been a vital aspect of everyday life. Most young people from the K’ho ethnic group in this hilly region are familiar with walking on stilts. The commune also excels in tug of war, stick-pushing, sack racing, and men’s volleyball.
Huynh Thi Son, head of the Culture and Social Affairs Division in La Da Commune, stated that upholding traditional games and sports not only safeguards ethnic cultural identity but also fosters a healthy cultural environment.
Through community sports festivals and friendly contests, local residents actively maintain, practice, and pass down these traditions to younger generations. This helps ensure that traditional sports remain an integral part of daily life, strengthening community cohesion, improving spiritual well-being, and promoting cultural values that support local tourism development.
Every sporting event conveys a cultural narrative through movement and community spirit, as residents of the mountainous communes in southeastern Lam Dong experience it together. Surrounded by the cheers of the audience and lively competitions, the pride in ethnic culture continues to resonate powerfully throughout highland communities.
