Vibrant Cau Ngu Festivals Held in Fishing Villages Across Eastern Lam Dong

In Phuoc Hoi Ward, the Cau Ngu Festival is held at Phuoc Loc Communal House and Whale Temple, a site that was recognized as a national historical and cultural relic in 2012. Over the years, this festival has evolved into a unique cultural practice of coastal communities, showcasing their appreciation for the ancestors who played a role in land reclamation and village establishment, while also paying tribute to Nam Hai Deity (the Whale), who is worshipped by fishermen as a guardian believed to protect and bless them at sea.

The ceremonial segment is conducted with reverence, featuring rituals such as processions honoring the Nam Hai Deity and the village's protective deity, ceremonies in honor of the village's founders and ancestors, a rite for wandering souls, and the main worship ceremony.

Following the solemn rituals, vibrant celebrations commence, showcasing a range of cultural and artistic activities along with traditional folk games that draw in many locals and tourists. These festivities include classical Vietnamese opera known as Hat Boi, Bai Choi folk singing, lion, dragon, and qilin dances, net-weaving contests, tug-of-war, sack races, and the smashing of pots while blindfolded.

The lively sounds of festival drums and gongs, paired with Vietnamese Opera and Bai Choi performances, create an energetic atmosphere around the communal house and the shrine of the fishing community. Crowds of both locals and visitors congregate to witness the traditional ceremonies and cheer on participants in the folk games.

Annually, the Cau Ngu Festival is celebrated not only to sustain and enhance cultural traditions but also to provide local fishermen with an opportunity to pray for favorable weather, tranquil seas, safe journeys, fruitful fishing expeditions, plentiful catches, and a future filled with prosperity and happiness.

At the Nam Hai Whale Shrine in Lien Huong Commune, the Cau Ngu Festival is held with great reverence by the local coastal community, featuring distinctive traditional rituals that attract large numbers of residents and visitors.

The festival comprises various rituals, including a procession carrying the royal decree at Binh An Communal House, a ceremony to welcome the living Whale Spirit from the beach, ceremonies honoring the ancestors and village founders, the Cheo Hau ritual, and the main worship ceremony at the shrine.

The traditional ceremonies are carried out with deep respect and seriousness, aimed at requesting the Nam Hai Deity's blessings for a fruitful fishing season, the ongoing development and success of the community, and the safety of fishermen at sea. Notably, the Vietnamese Opera performances featured during the festival draw large crowds of locals and tourists alike.

Throughout the festival, both residents and visitors have the opportunity to observe and engage in a range of unique cultural and artistic events, which serve to honor the cultural heritage of coastal communities and strengthen community bonds.

Depending on local conditions, the Cau Ngu Festival can last anywhere from two to five days, with celebrations continuing until July 31, 2026, to cater to the spiritual and religious needs of the community.

In addition to meeting the spiritual and religious needs of coastal inhabitants, the Cau Ngu Festival plays a vital role in maintaining traditional cultural values, enhancing community connections, and promoting the coastal regions of eastern Lam Dong.

The rituals that have been passed down through generations continue to highlight the vibrant essence of the area's maritime cultural heritage in modern times.
